I am looking for help on the deflection issue. A federal AE 158 grain soft point did not do the job. Do any of you have experience with this? It mushroomed properly, but deflected way off the poi.

contact with bone can most certainly result in some degree of deflection .... I have no experience with Federal AE 158's but to have plenty with Nosler 158 gr JHP's .... from both rifles and revolvers, they do the job and do it well

I have already switched to the nosler. Will see.
I assumed the soft point would do the job. It worked well last year. The deflection really gives me pause.

here again, when a bullet hits a bone, some degree of deflection is normal .... many factors can figure into the degree .... I've seen some interesting, deadly wound tracks that made no sense to me whatsoever

Yeah, it remains a mystery. Don't like that. Still think of the 180.

if a rifle likes it, nothing wrong with a 180 .... there is a school of thought that says slower, heavier bullets handle deflection through brush better .... looking forward to following what you learn
