Iam not going to give away my age, but I have been hunting these woods sence rotary phones and
Deer whistle's were on the front bumpers of most
Trucks. And on the phone you didn't have to dial 1
For English.or dial 2 for tech support.
Never seen a tree this size marked. Most Of the deer around here are 4-5-6 pointers. And small 8 pointers. Nothing with heavy. Thick horns or wide
Spreads.

I understand bears reach as far up a tree and claw it. They are saying "Look how big I am, stay away!".

It looks like a bear clawed that tree to me too.

I have seen that myself back east and out here.

Nope.
It was done next to an old tractor roadway on a farm. And was ment to be in your face.
And easy for everyone to see. If it was a bear
He would have to have been sitting down, not standing.
There have been big cats spotted around, and one
Hit by a car crossing a road about a yr ago.?
I know bears bite the trees as well as rake them
And you can see like puncture holes on this tree.
Don't know what cats do.?

Most bear scratchin I've seen is at an angle rather than plumb like that. I'd guess a buck that decided he didn't like rubbing that stout a tree and moved on. But I've been wrong plenty a times before! Any classic buck rubs nearby?

If that was around here my money would be on a cougar. Not sure what you have for cats wherever you are.
