.44 magnum Ohio Doe

Killed a doe Friday morning with my Big Boy .44 magnum. I usually use my Henry 45-70 but decided this year to go out with the .44. Due to work I could not get off until Thursday and Friday. All ready killed a nice buck with my bow so I was only hunting does. Well, as you might guess on Friday morning had to pass up two bucks, one a real dandy. At 8:30am miss doe came by. She was quartering toward me at 35 yards so I put the crosshairs behind her right shoulder and pulled the trigger. She ran about 50 yards and went down. Bullet entered right where I aimed and exited just before her left hind quarter. When I got home I skinned her out and was amazed the damage that .44 mag did. Upon hitting the ribs the 240 grain XTP bullet opened up immediately and put a hole in the rib cage that I could stick 3 fingers in. There was no exit hole as the bullet exited between the ribs and hind quarter. How she managed to even run 50 yards is amazing. From here on out if I am hunting in an area where I know my shots will be under 100 yards I will carry my .44 mag. I was shooting my reloads which were as follows: Starline Brass, 21.5 grains Alliant 2400, CCI primers, 240 grain XTP bullet. Get 1" groups with That at 100 yards. Also, the doe was a full mature older doe, probably 120 - 130 pounds dressed.

nice shooting on a nice doe .... congrats indeed .... having deer hunted with our Ruger Redhawk 44 Mag for close to 40 years I've seen what a 240 grain Nosler JHP does .... haven't had a chance to hunt with our Henry 44 but have no doubt that it will hit even stronger

Congratulations, nice shot! And that is a beautiful rifle. I have shot three deer with a .44 magnum, that being a Marlin (JM) model 1894 using Remington 240 grains. I own two of them. I estimate that all three were between 30 and 40 yards. All were doe and two ran about 35 yards and the other ran in a circle and dropped over dead. I have not had the Marlins as long as my .30-06 and therefore have shot many more with the Remington 760 Gamemaster. I bought the Marlins in 2002 and 2006, the Remington in 1971. But for a good brush gun especially, I like the .44 magnum. But, for the last few years, I have given up on shooting doe.

Most excellent! I had hoped to hunt this year but medical issues killed that ideal. My Bigboy 44 was going to be my gun. I even tested bunch of loads till I landed on what shot the best for me. I had planned on the Leverevolution 225gn FTX's over 19.6 grains of Lil'gun in modified Winchester brass. Hopefully next year.

Man I feel for ya. Had to miss the entire gun season the first year they allowed rifles due to illness. Still makes me mad. Hope you get better so next year you can chrisen the Big Boy.

Congratulations. I'm hunting this season with my 45 Colt Big Boy steel carbine. I haven't had a chance at a shot yet. Had 5 does browse through at 30 yards the other evening but currently it's buck only where I'm at. It becomes buck or does the last 5 days of the season later this month so hopefully I'll get the opportunity.
