is hunting a consideration

I just realized that I have posted twice in this thread, but not answered the question. I bought my .357 BBS primarily for range work, but with the idea I could use it to hunt with. I carried it two seasons. I will be using the 30-06 bolt action Mauser this season. Not very confident that the .357 will reach out beyond 100 yds effectively.

Every rifle I buy is duel purpose. Target and hunting. Here in California that means there must be suitable and available lead alternative ammunition. And with that it's the 22lr that's the biggest issue.

I bought both of the big boys with huntin in mind.
The 44 has been but we haven't been able to score yet.
The 41 hasn't been huntin yet but, plan on changin that this season.
Now I bought a H001 just for fun, and for the two youngest to learn with.

Hunting is central to picking out a rifle for me, even though I may not hunt much or at all. I used to hunt deer now and then and varmints regularly and rabbits on opening day. I still choose guns that I could hunt with, though. You never know when a special opportunity or a real need might come up. Years ago I let a few deer go by just because I don't really care for the venison or it would have been a long haul back to the truck. Drove my brother nuts. The BBS .44 would make an excellent (Ohio legal) deer rifle now, but I may not take the shot

I hunt squirrel, rabbit, deer, and do a lot of fishing. Have 7 grand kids the 4 boys love to squirrel hunt, they all like to fish,mushroom hunt and take timber treks, taking the older boys deer youth season this fall, main goal is to teach them good hunting ethics and Saftey
So guess I’m doing what I can to keep the numbers up
Taking them is the best time I ever had in my 62 years of life

Every one of my Henry's were obtained with hunting being their primary purpose. Even the little youth bolt guns for the kids - start them hitting paper and empty cans.....next up, first squirrels and rabbits.

The public hunting down the road is donated land, but still used for cattle, so there are mushrooms galore; kind of strange...........

Not really for me. I just wanted something fun to shoot so I got the .327 Federal Mag. I just purchased a .44 Marlin 1894 (JM) that I might use for hunting if I can every afford to get back on a deer lease.

Absolutely I select my rifles for hunting. I don't own anything used specifically to punch paper, albeit that's what 10/22 Rugers mostly do - but they're set up as hunting rifles . Besides, what other reason is there to get a 45-70 single shot?

Yes, I'm a hunter but I have had some major heart problems the last few years.

Going to go deer hunting this fall.

I'm going to be buying a All Weather .357 for a backup deer rifle to a 1971 Marlin 336 that I picked up for $400 that is basically brand new.

Hunting was not a consideration with either of my Henry's. I hunt, but I already have guns that I use for hunting. I just enjoy shooting, and nothing is more fun to me these days than working a nice smooth lever gun plinking gongs with friends. Dead on accuracy wasn't a consideration either. I have guns that can drive tacks already. My Henry's are just for fun making gongs sing songs.

Every long gun I've ever purchased was with some type of hunting in mind. I used my .357 BB to bag a 200-pound sow in Florida last May. First big game animal I ever took with a lever-action. What a thrill!

Now that I'm living in AZ, I'm looking forward to trying it out on javelina.

My main reason for buying my SGC was the rabbit population on my acreage. My Weimaraner has gotten a few, but he has recently decided that he prefers stalking and chasing them to killing them. Once he kills one, it becomes a “broken toy” and he can no longer play with it.

I should add that all of my rifles except for my M1 Carbine were bought with hunting in mind. Primarily I carry a Ruger bolt gun in 7mm-08 for deer and anything longer than 100 yds, but I recently acquired a .44 magnum Ruger Carbine that I will probably carry for deer this year as most of my hunting areas are 50-100 yard shots. A BBS (or CCH) in .44 or .357 might end up in the safe too...

I bought my Henry because it was not only shiny and pretty, but awesome work of art mechanically. I used as an excuse with the boss that hunting nutria with a .22 wasn't cutting it.

Hunting leases in Texas have gotten out of my price range. I was on a lease for about 20 years that was priced fairly and had some good game. The landholders sold to a corporation back in 2007 and immediately tripled the price of the lease. Haven't looked for another one since.

Absolutely. I grew up packing a rifle in pursuit of game and still do. Very fortunate to have had this tradition passed down and to be able to share it with my children. Don't get to hunt quite as much as I would always like but make time especially in deer and turkey season. Elk and bear hunt when the opportunity allows. Varmint hunt too especially for coyotes and night hunt for 'coons with hounds. Used to trap and small game hunt a lot too. Rabbits,squirrels,quail etc. Everybody's probably thinking man what else do they do down there in Arkansas !! Well somehow we find time to work! As to the question of gun choices I would have to say most all of my firearms are chosen based on using them for hunting.
