Just to damn tempting to do it. First of next year wife will in Memory Care facility and I am getting tired of the city life and expense....

Nice place to live. I did a similar thing and don’t regret it.

I left the suburban life and moved way back in the woods here in Minnesnowda and don't regret it, but, I have a large modern house, a heated and air conditioned shop, and a pole barn as well.

I do not think I would make it in a one room shack anymore. Maybe when I was younger, but now I like my comforts.

Tiny homes are all the rage now (for some odd reason). Maybe add on a bit and you'd never have to leave.

My dream would be to leave “civilization”. My wife needs far more social activity than I do. I’d be happy to live farther out with less people exposure.

Since you have the property I can understand the urge to leave the city. I have a couple acres with a 900 ft2 house. All I need in a house is a bed, kitchen, bath, utility room, and some space for reading/computer or lounging. I have a small workbench in my "living room" but no TV. The house is just a place to be when I am not in my 1500 ft2 heated workshop puttering on whatever has attracted my attention now. My interests are eclectic and I am easily distracted so I have more than one thing in process at any one time. Drives my sibs crazy but they have adapted. This is why I live alone. I understand the tiny house as long as I have the room to indulge my mental exercises.

Even if you add onto it, Forty; something like Hatch's Workshop, or Gene's Community room, or the new White House Ballroom; it probably won't help you to enjoy the time you spend there anyway. It might make it easier and nicer, though.

I hope your sweet wife gets the very best care as you downshift toward that offramp and a new life. I'm already looking forward to next year's pics.

I just pray for you and your wife. Going through what you are both going through is tough. Ive seen it in action first hand from when my wife owned an assisted living facility. I hope whatever you are going to need to deal with that the good lord gives you the strength to get through it.

My son is currently living in a Tiny Home and is liking it. Of course he moved there from a travel trailer so it’s a real upgrade. It’s fairly large with a nice sized bedroom, decent sized bathroom and large kitchen/living area. Has a compact dishwasher and an on demand water heater. He say’s after very limited showers in the trailer he is enjoying longer showers. It’s home built by a friend and my son is renting it from him.

I also suffer from "ooh, there is a new squirrel" syndrome. You and your wife are in our prayers. If you need help with the build, I'm up in Hanover.

Think I will add insulation inside and finish it off. I have it wired for basic use with portable generator and might add a small solar setup. Will try spending a night or so there and see how it works out in the future as my weekend camp!

Back in 2013, when I first moved to where I live now in central/upstate NY, I played more golf, and got to know a guy that seemed to have a similar schedule to mine. We'd usually bump into each other out on the course, and join up to play together. He wasn't from the area originally either. He asked me if I moved up here for a girl or for work, and for me it was work. He said back when he moved up here, he did it for a girl, but it didn't last. Anyway, to the point of this, he told me how after that, he lived on 10 acres in a little cabin with no electricity for about 10 years. That was in the 80s and 90s. I had a ton of questions about that, and he said everyone acted like it was such a horrible situation, but he was fine and actually enjoyed it. He had a generator for when he needed it, but he hardly ever used it. He worked someplace where he could shower every day, and led a pretty simple life for those years.
As much as that sounded like a bad thing when I first heard it, it has parts that sound pretty good when thinking about it now.

A very frugal friend (who's now passed) lived for nearly twenty years on a sailboat docked year round at a Marina in Westbrook. It was an old boat, but seaworthy and it was free. He spent a summer getting everything in working order again and then moved in. The marina had showers and toilets and he had shore power, cable and internet, and water. He owned his own store selling used Marine Equipment. Boarding the boat in the winter was sometimes challenging, but it was always quite warm, comfortable, and filled with books and smoking pipes. He enjoyed the movement of the boat by the wind, currents, and tides; and he enjoyed being in solitude. He occasionally sailed it in Long Island Sound with friends or alone, but it was usually tied up securely at the dock in the Marina. We called him Captain Mike when talking about him with other friends.
