Days that I don't go to work I will take a hike in the woods. Much better exercise as the terrain has many elevation changes, plus you never know what you'll see.
Just a little over a mile and usually take 30 to 40 mins.
This morning I saw a few deer and spooked a couple that I never saw.

Mushrooms?



Got Beech trees with burl, big shag bark hickory and some large white oak.

And finally back at the barn.

I tell you, this little Trapper sure is easy to carry around.

That’s a gorgeous trail you’re hiking on but I’m swatting the misquotes (mosquito) that are buzzing in my mind.

Actually not too bad, but I do spray a little Off, on the arms, and around the neck and back of my head.
The darn spider webs are the worst. I usually pick up a small limb to use and clear those.

We live deep in the woods and I ride my four wheeler up and down our half mile drive each day looking for mushrooms, berries, nuts ect.
Right now the Black Walnuts are dropping and I am collecting them. Also Hickory nuts. The Black berries are done for the year.
Two weeks ago the Chanterelle mushrooms were appearing and Carol is drying them in her dryer for next winter. Right now I am finding
Chicken of the Woods in vast quantities. You can just freeze them without any preparation other than washing them off.
Yes, they do taste like chicken, or as Carol says, "Tender chicken".

Be very careful picking mushrooms friends. Some of them can kill you.

Come on over Al, after the walk we could ring some steel and compare 'em on paper. and thanks for the kind words.

Forty, been tromping these woods for 20+ something years now and have yet to run across any poisonous reptiles. (knock on wood).
But, that's what the ole 357 is for.

Coop, I believe those large ones I saw this morning were the Chicken of the Woods.

I' have come to enjoy playing with the camera here in the past couple of years.
I find myself looking for things to photograph.

I have seen a couple this year around our city neighborhood streets along the wooded side and sure I have some down around my range area 30 miles away. My trails there are shaded quite a bit and the trails are covers in typical dead leaves...pine tags and such..and I could easily step on one. They love to hide around in places like that. Bought me a pair of the those boots for when I walk down there now.

I've posted before that I used to walk the lumber company firebreaks back in my young Marine days. They had deep ditches on either side of the dirt roads and there was always trash floating in the "moats" to shoot at. Great way to pass a few hours. I'd take the Diamondback or the Single Six most days and a box of 22lr. Once in a while I would take the Blackhawk and shoot 38s for a little more boom, or step up to the Commander 45.

I'd be more worried about the poison ivy from the first couple pictures than the mosquitos. I just look at it and get a 2 week rash.

Well, here in Minnesnowda we don't have Copperheads or Moccasins, we do have some rattlers in the southern counties though.
The real deadly ones come out in the Winter, (at least that's what we tell our southern visitors).
They're called snow snakes and snow spiders. The problem is they're pure white and you cannot see them in the snow.
They always ask, "Are they deadly?", and we answer, "Of course". "So do they bite?".
We tell them, "No, they crawl up your behind and freeze you to death!".

I've had some female cousins stepping carefully in the snow.
I'm really not a good person.

Hey, Clovis. The poison ivy has no affect on me, I can/do literally pull it up with my bare hands.
Now my sister on the other hand can almost just look at it and she breaks out.

Well, I skipped the walk this morning, road over to the main farm entrance and watched the sunrise.
Then took the Big Boy for a little photo shoot.

Then over to the bamboo thick, for something completely different.

I went hiking in our woods today and battled the mosquitoes for some mushrooms again.
I found a nice patch of Chanterelles right away and got about two dozen for Carol to dry for the Winter.
Then I hiked in to a fallen oak log that I had spotted before and got a bunch of Chicken of the Woods.
I brought in a five gallon bucket and that's about one third of them.
Remember, be very careful selecting mushrooms. Be sure what they are.

Thanks, yes indeed, the place offers quite some views. the property is or nearly is a mile long.
The South end, where we live is on probably the highest part of the county and drops off down on the north end to where it is flat for over a 1/4 mile.
It's pretty much heaven to me... other than the blame heat, I'm about ready for some cooler, not cold, weather.

Oh my coop, that's quite the haul there, bud. Heck yeah.
I found some Lion's mane a year or so ago, have been keeping an eye open for some more of that. My that was some good stuff.
