We got a new dog yesterday. He came up from Texas. Mary's involvement in dog rescues culminated in Copper's rescue. (She named him Copper as he has copper accents) He was going to be euthanized if no one could rescue him. Mary made the decision he would get a new lease on life. She sort of asked me, but after the decision was made . That was three months ago. He was fostered by two different families while being treated for heartworm. He needed to be calm, no running for two months. He put on weight, but is otherwise healthy. He has to remain quiet for two more weeks, then he can go back to normal.
He is not a fan of hardwood floors, so most of our smaller rugs and runners are down for him. He is a mix of a type of coon dog and pointer. He is calm for now and getting to know his new home. We were ready for a dog. Hopefully he gets acclimated soon and enjoys his new life.

You're already off to a great start. Congratulations. I'm guessing the "copper accent" is a color and not a nod to film noir.

Good looking dog. I can see the pointer in him. How old is he?

He's somewhere between 1 and 2 years. Hopefully our vet will narrow it down.

That's so good to hear how you and the wife have saved this dog, Dave. I think it's wonderful.

Good Job. My middle daughter tends to rescue things, even people.
That last thing tends to get her in trouble.

Excellent! I had great success the one time I went the rescue route (pointer) and would certainly do it again.

What I can't really fathom is working at one of those facilities. I'd be taking so many dogs home with me that I'd never have a place to sit.

He's still recovering from his 2 1/2 day van ride from Texas, but he is seemingly appreciative of being saved. He made friends with one of the foster's husbands and seems to have the same attitude towards me. He hadn't uttered a peep until today. He was asleep and Mary was in the shower. He woke up and saw me up in the barn and barked. I heard him and saw him looking out the glass of the patio door. Apparently I can't go outside without him. Mary and I are both so glad to have him with us. (He's getting better about the hardwoods, slowly)

ditchparrot, Mary also volunteers at a cat shelter once a week. I thought we would have had cats before a dog. We both had cats before, Mary's were 19 and 20 when they passed. Today, she showed me a video of Copper in the kill shelter cell/room. Apparently it caught someone's attention at the rescue group. He was very excited to see the volunteer and her couple of treats. He has yet to wag his tail, but I'm sure it will be soon. His tail was going a mile a minute in the video.

Interesting about the hardwood floors, we used to have the same problem with our last dog. With him we moved from a house with all carpet except for the kitchen to a home with vinyl plank flooring. He would not walk on the floors so we had to put carpet runners down for him. Nice thing was we could control where he could walk or not with the runners.
