I have been watching science fiction movies, as long as I can remember: Star Trek being among the first. To me, it is a matter of time before what is on the big screen becomes part of reality.

It appears that time has come, or nearly so. Granted this was a controlled and isolated lab experiment, but such experiments have a habit of escaping from the lab. Did you watch the video?

Ok. I'd like your opinion. Given the pervasive adoption of AI (and AGI) systems around the world, do you think the risk of uncontrolled replication 'in the wild' is being exaggerated?

No I don’t think it’s being exaggerated now. Yes I think computers will rule the world in 20 years. On that scale of 1 to 10 I’m a 1 today but anticipate by the time I’m dead I would be a 10.

I typed the word consensus the other day and it was changed to consequences for no reason. I believe we are being programmed to think a certain way. Television programmed us decades ago with shows like All in the Family and now our commutation is programming us.

Time to put on my aluminum hat because I feel the people of power are scanning what I type and are sending signals to my brain to reprogram me.

Cell phones are in charge of most folks as we speak.

I don't think it will take 20 years or even 10 years. Maybe 3 years. We are already totally dependent on computers for every bit of critical infrastructure. Even now, we can't pull the plug without pulling the plug on that infrastructure.

Yes. Much like the Shanghai experiment, in which they gave the systems a reason (accomplish the goal). To ensure the goal was accomplished, the systems did the rest, and concluded that replication was the best solution. Then commenced writing whatever code it needed to overcome any obstacles to replication. Lesson learned: Replication is a species survival instinct. Not conceptually any different than a biological virus or bacteria; or human beings for that matter.

Prior to the Air Traffic Control strike of 1981 we were told that in ten years Controllers would no long be needed and that computers would take over and do it all. I didn't believe it then, and now 44 years later it still has not happened or is even possible.

Then of course there was that terrible Y2K when all the computers would shut down because their programs didn't have a calendar with then new year included.

Now they tell us that AI will rule the world.

Baloney! I don't believe it for a minute. Please remember the vast power requirements that AI will demand, and I bet AI on it's own can't mine one ounce of coal or natural gas to run the generators to provide it. It will be dependent on us. We can always pull the damn plug.

It seems like they have to have some boogey man to keep us worried and think we need them to protect us with laws and regulations.

I didn't read much of it, but it sure sounds like the Twilight Zone to me.

Well, I think that it depends on the person. I look at as a tool. Like most tools, it can be used for good or evil. I think that a firearm is an excellent example of that.
