Ticks

I hate ticks. I don't know about the rest of you, but I hate ticks. Funny thing for someone who hates ticks to spend the last thirty five years living in the boonies, but I hate crowds and traffic even more. A conundrum for sure, but there you have it. Back to the fact that I hate ticks.
About four this morning, I had a dream, the details of which don't matter, but let's say the key element concerned me ending up in the woods with my son and we were both covered in ticks. That'll wake you up. I knew it was a dream, but when I awakened at four am, I had to get up and go into the bathroom, I didn't want to disturb the boss, and turn on all the lights, and check myself head to toe for ...
Ticks.
I hate them. (Have I mentioned that?)
We treat the dog, and rarely find any on her and if we do, the little hitchhikers are dead or dying. Not her fault, just a fact of country living. Tina once mowed under the trees in the Orchard and came in covered in seed ticks.
I told her she had to move, but did she listen?
If we see someone on TV or in a Movie with a tick on them, Miss Tina and I both start to imagine we have ticks crawling on us and have to check. It's like some who watches horror films and suddenly every creak or settling in the house is a vampire trying to get in, or the slasher coming down the hall. We know better, but we are just too easily influenced.
Did I mention I hate ticks? Hope you are all doing well today, and have a good weekend planned.
I plan to work on the CASE project, but first I have to go burn the sheets.
We all have those things that make us get a shiver up our spine, care to share?
Oh, By the way, I don't care for spiders dropping on my pillow while I'm sleeping either...

Be glad chickens aren't six feet tall as well.
Since Tina has been raising them for thirty years... I have a new found respect.
They would be like the Velociraptors of the day...

I would rather contend with the occasional tick than live in a city. Far more parasites in a city than in the woods.

Ticks are a misery from hell. Thats my opinion after 67 years... seed ticks are the worst xausecthey often come in Packs of hundreds at once .... the filthy little basta_ds......

Yes, me too, I also hate ticks.
So bow season opened on Oct 1st here. I spent the first couple mornings in a treestand, and the weather was still pretty warm. My routine is to wake, shower, get dressed, and head out to the stand. On Friday, the 4th, I did my usual, and then the next morning, Saturday, I slept a little later, so no shower, just get dressed and out to the stand. Ended up not showering until later on in the day, and sure enough, I feel something on my left shoulder blade area. Funny how fast you finish the shower when you know you have something to look at when you get out. When I got a good look at it in the mirror, sure enough, a tick. It had a good hold but hasn't started to fill up yet. Unfortunately, this isn't the first time I've had one on me. I bought these tick remover things, they look like little claws from a claw hammer. There are three sizes, and all I've ever used is the smallest size. You slide the claws under the tick so it's caught in the slot area, and just gently lift and pull to dislodge it. They work amazingly well, and a co-worker told me about them because he uses them. I looked that tick over under a bright desk light, and it looks like a deer tick, so that sucks, but from everything I've read, getting to it within 24 hours is key. Because of my change to normal shower routine, this could have been more than 24 hours, but not by much. Anyway, as another tick-hater, I stabbed that one with a pin and then burned it over a candle.

Another Tick Hater here, but this year was strange. The strangest year I've ever seen. NO Deer Ticks. Have not even seen one all year. Early in the season I saw some Lone Stars and had just 1 bite all year. Now on the flip side, about 20 years ago I had 1000's of Deer Ticks on my land. They were all over the place. It was like the Twilight Zone.
One thing that is different though, I used to always let the Deer hang around. Starting about 3 or 4 years ago, I run them off every chance I get. Could that be the big difference?

We don't see near as many as when we first bought this farm but we know the reason. Guineas... Free roaming bug eating machines. Used to be chickens, but between the feral dogs and coyote population they killed two dozen before Tina stopped free ranging the chickens.
The guineas? A few months ago I caught sight of a large dog running away from one of the barns. Right on his heels? Guinea rooster, pecking at the heels, at throwing a fit. Suddenly there were a half dozen full grown Guineas, attacking the DOG. He did the tuck tail run. Hasn't been back. The guineas weren't playing... They were out for blood.

I had one attached to my chest earlier this year and the dogs have had a few. I too hate ticks but that spider in the first post is down right creepy.

What's really creepy? Go out at night and shine a bright light across the yard... Scattered across the yard are dozens of pairs of neon yellowish green eyes, two inches apart, staring at you. Sweep the light across the yard, the pattern repeats.
The eyes belong to The Taranulas, who come out of their spidey holes at night in force.
Driving along the road, the dang things dart across the blacktop. They are big enough to see when you are driving...

Yes I DO NOT care for ticks and when I go to my range property I put on those mesh type stockings and tuck in pants legs into socks along with my work boots treated with Sawyers spray. That takes care of anything from the ground and always looking for anything crawling on shirt arms or whatever. On windy days I think they fall from trees! Still I might get one tick that gets to me during the season but find it quick.

I can't stand these creepy little creatures either. I'm fortunate that I don't get a lot of them on me. I haven't had to remove any this year. On the other hand my wife seem to attract them. We can be work in the yard within feet of each other and she will have 1, 2 or more on her. I'll have none. I wonder if some folks body chemistry attracts them more than others.
