Your Current EDC...

Every now and then I like to ask what people who choose to carry, are currently carrying. The fads change, products come out, and the current hot topics are always evolving. Recent trends have been to incorporate optics in the smaller and smaller guns, and optics have been appearing on everything these days. I haven't made that move myself and have stuck to my basic rotation for the last decade, the Smith 5 shot .357 Scandium M&P 340 Revolver for warm weather carry... and my two decade old SIG P220 .45 for cooler weather where I can dress appropriately to carry the larger firearm. The SIG is old, not as pretty as she once was, but neither am I. She's still a shooter.

So, the question here is:

Have you changed your EDC or are you still Old School like I am?
Have you made the jump to Optics?

I attended a good bit of training in the past, but Gimpy, I haven't taken the classes I wanted to, even though most have the ability to accommodate physically challenge students.

I'd like to attend Gunsite myself, but not in the cards right now, don't think I could keep up.
I have to satisfy myself with practice here on the home range. (Oh, home on the range.)

I have my original carry gun was my duty USP 40; I carried that from 96 until early 2010. I swapped to a FN 5.7 of all things. It was half the weight with 10 10-round mag extension. 30 rounds instead of 13+1. We were living in Seattle at the time. Once we moved to CT, I bounced around between sig p228, USP, and ended up with 1911's once the law changed. We moved to VA, and I bounced around between Beretta 92c, p226s, and any of my USPs, and landed on a sig p365 XL for about three years. I recently swapped over to a Beretta LTT px4 compact with RDO. I made the jump to optics with the 365 XL. It takes some getting used to, but my eyes appreciate it.

Anyone taken any Training lately, and if so, how was it?

I've not taken training in years. I have a hard time justifying the costs when I have a range at my house and can run any number of drills.

I'm turning 50 this year. I am sure I can hack a run and gun 3 day course. The problem is, I'm turning 50, and I am at a point where I don't want to do a run and gun 3 day course.

I've not looked at places in years. That's another issue for me. Traveling to a place, staying in a hotel, eating crappy food, for a course sounds about as fun as a prostate exam using a toilet bowl cleaner.

My EDC was a Smith and Wesson model 638 for many years. I "upgraded" to a Smith and Wesson 640 pro about 7 or 8 years ago. I like the night sights and larger sight picture it gives. I also don't mind it's bit more weight and little bit of extra barrel.
I doubt I would carry anything with an optic EDC.
I am really liking my Ruger Security six 2 3/4". It may take over as a primary edc on the belt in the cooler months when it can be concealed. I like the model 66 or 19 2.5" for that role, but the Ruger just seems to fill that role a little better.

I tried to EDC the Glock 43 for a couple of months, but it just wasn't "right" for me.

As far as training, I haven't.

My EDC is the same as it’s been for several years. Old school for sure. Ruger LCRX six shot 327 Fed Mag exposed hammer revolver. I like the exposed hammer for the advantage of having the ability to take an aimed shot if needed. (Such as maybe a mass shooter in a mall as opposed to a bad breath distance) Summer I carry in a pocket holster and winter I switch to a paddle style open top belt holster.

No optics for me. Too many years ago I took several training classes including defensive handgun, advanced defensive handgun and pocket pistol defense handgun. But I have not taken a class for too many years. When I had access to a DNR property to shoot at I could set up several targets and do moving drills but that property has been permanently closed to shooting. The local indoor ranges do not allow drawing from a holster and shooting unless you are in a class.

I always advised my students to carry what they can shoot the best, and everyone here knows you are distinguished with the Nikon. The targets you have posted are always impressive. You are good close in and from a distance.

Pics of my EDC Rotations... the most carried is the Ultra Light Smith Scandium M&P 340, "The Beast". She weighs nothing, but is brutal to shoot. Tina bought it for me as a get well present after a surgery. My Guy at Greentop in Richmond sold it to us used, and it came with a box of .357 Hollow points, missing 5 rounds.

I shot a full cylinder, then ordered some Smith and Wesson Factory Rosewood hand filling grips. They are nice looking and "help" with the recoil, but this thing IS a Beast. You practice with 148 grain wadcutter 38 ammo, 158 LSWC, and finally shoot 5 rounds of magnum to insure you know where it shoots.

One thing about the Snubby Revolver. If someone has to look down the barrel, there is NO Doubt that it's loaded.

* Before the cards and letters start, this was shot with a timer and of course my finger isn't even in the picture, let alone on the trigger. Took a lot of tries to get the lighting right.


My Winter Carry is the Sig P220 45, and it was a Present from Miss Tina the first year we were married. It was the departmental carry gun for the County PD, and I shot it in Service Auto Class for PPC and won against the 1911s and the Autos with adjustable sights. I was shooting thousands of rounds a year, and the Department's SIG armorer would inspect it and replace the springs every year as a favor as long as I ordered the spring kits from Brownell's.

* That's the Miami Classic Shoulder Holster from Galco, still looks good after all these years. I have the same setup for the Glock 23/22. I have others but always revert back to this one.


Old, scarred, and a bit beat up, she's still a shooter, just like the old fat guy behind the trigger.

I like the fact that there is no safety, the first shot is a long double action pull, then single action follow up. Decock to holster. Yes, just eight rounds with one in the chamber, but with two mags on the off side, I'm good. I often think I should find another P220 and add a back up for long trips.

My EDC is a Ruger LCRX in 38 special. Its loaded with Hornady Critical Defense ammo and I carry one speed strip with me. I have several other speed strips that I keep in my pickup. I also keep a CZ P-09 handy in whatever vehicle I am driving. Was thinking about getting the new Smith Bodyguard 2.0 in 380 but I haven’t found one yet as they seem to be very popular.

Taurus 1911 in .40 but that was just too damn big to conceal comfortably.

at distances out to 50 feet, I'm still as quick as I ever was with irons... During the day. early morning, late evening, that speed, and the distance i can shoot at is significantly reduced. At night, it's terrible.

Those times are when the RDO's are helpful. Though in day time, i am quicker further out. I regularly shoot at 75 yds.

If you could see me, I am bowing. I'd genuflect, (I'm not worthy, I'm not worthy...). But with my knees... Miss T would have to help me up.

Great shooting. Seriously. Back when I was competing in PPC, we shot the 50 yard line from prone, sitting, kneeling, and offhand, but never 75 yards. These days I shoot most of my handguns from 7-20 yards but some of the target quality guns I'll move back to 25.

I'll shoot long guns from the ranges I expect to employ them around the farm.
Some of the long guns are iron sights, some have reddots, and some have glass.

I actually own two of these, one for me, one for Carol, and I have laser sights installed on both.

I have some of the larger, therefore easier to shoot accurately, guns in various locations. But don't carry them daily. I have a Glock 35, long slide ..40 caliber as the house gun, with a mounted light. Nice when things go bump in the night, and it's very accurate. They were designed as match guns.

I very rarely carry, so no EDC kind of gun for me. I no longer mess with tiny, hard to shoot conceal carry guns. When I do carry, I go to medium or full sized handguns as needed. For the very, very rare possibility of needing a gun for bear defense, I carry a DW 15-2 357 mag snub nose revolver in a Simply Rugged shoulder holster. For a handgun for defense against human type predators, I carry a 1911ish Kimber KDS9c 9mm with a 15 round capacity.

I shoot both guns as range guns, though, and enjoy shooting both just for the fun guns they are to shoot. Both are accurate well beyond typical self-defense distances. In fact, I can even switch to a 6" barrel on the DW for other uses.

That's in broad daylight shooting a full size ipsc steel plate target. For those times red dots help, late at night also. especially in low light. nothing really helps in pitch black, mostly because you can't see your target.

If I wanted to dip my hand into RDO's again. I'd pick up a 22lr pistol with a RDO mount and start with that.
You'd be surprised at how effective it can be out past 50 yds.

I also have a light and laser on my Shockwave. The guy at the gun store where I got it said that because of the way you need to hold it most people tend to shoot it a little high.
