Pressure Treated Wood Question

Post by HenryFan » Mon Sep 02, 2024 8:47 am

Last month, I bought another utility trailer and it has a pressure treated wood deck. 2X6 pressure treated pine I believe.

I was so new when I bought it, you could smell the paint and the wood.

I want to apply some sort of wood preservative to the deck and I seek comments on how long I should wait for the wood to dry before I apply a treatment.

I am familiar with Thompson's Water Seal, does that seem to be good option?

Not related to firearms but comments are appreciated.

Thanks - HenryFan

I use Thompson's on the wooden floors of our various trailers .... I usually apply the first coat when the wood reaches the point it readily soaks in the Thompson's .... where possible be sure to seal the ends and sides of the boards .... I've not found it worth the effort seal the bottom of the boards

The general rule I would go by for new pressure treated wood is to wait 6 months for it to dry out before applying anything to it.

I also like Thompson's Water Seal.

Thanks for the above comments.

Is any preparation(s) advisable before applying the product other than scrubbing the deck with something like dish detergent?

If you want to seal it with something that I think is way better than Thompsons use Penefin. Its more expensive but will outlast Thompsons by a long shot.

If you are using an Oil Base product, you don't want to use anything water before using it. It needs to be very dry to properly absorb it.

There might be a stamp from the lumber mill on the wood that tells you the pressure treated grade. If it is "Ground Contact" or better, you don't need to add to it.
Otherwise Penofin as Al suggested is very good, specifically Penofin Ultra Premium Red Label. Thompson's won't hold up to wear and tear, heat or UV. It'll break down and start flaking. You'll end up wanting to redo the wood with something else and you'll find the residual Thompson that hasn't started flaking hard to remove.

I treated my trailer wood floor with diesel fuel and burnt motor oil........Has held very well out in the weather....No cracks or splits......And can be re-applied as often as you want.

I don’t do a thing to pressure treated lumber and live in a far harsher climate than most of you guys. If you do decide to seal it, you want to seal both sides, both edges and both ends. Otherwise, you are just wasting money. If you leave one edge unsealed, the moisture will just come in from there and rot will commence as if you didn’t seal it at all.
