I used my older utility trailer again in the last few days and I noticed that some small rust spots (rust zits?) have appeared. I think some of them are the result of rock strikes. I want to touch up the spots before they grow and my plan is to use a rattle can of glossy black Rustoleum.
Before I start, I have a couple of questions in hopes I get the best results.
I plan to sand the rust spots to get rid of the rust. What grit sandpaper do I want to buy that will not mar the steel but will remove the rust? Do I need a sanding block since most rust spots are on flat surfaces?
Should I spray primer on the sanded spots before I apply the finish spray? Is it a problem if some of the primer lands on top of existing paint finish?
Is Rustoleum a good choice? Rustoleum primer should be compatible with Rustoleum paint, I presume.
Thanks in advance for any tips.

Re: Rust Spot Touch-Up Tips
There are some specialty coatings you can buy that will convert the rust and allow the paint to stick. Years ago it was POR-15 but there might be some others out there.

I assume you are talking about the trailers fenders. Get some heavy undercoating take the wheels off and clean the bottom side good. Then spray with the undercoating or its gonna do it again. You can also use adhesive and cut some light rubber mud flaps and glue then to the underside of the fenders. I have had good luck with rustoleum paint with the primer in the paint.
