Dow Closes Above 4,000
Yesterday was the first time the Dow has closed above 4,000. The Russel 2000 also had its yearly realignment yesterday. I’ve followed the major markets daily for more than 50 years.

Re: Dow Closes Above 4,000
It wasn't the first time that's happened. The Dow actually closed above 40,000 last May 17th (40,003.59). Yesterday, it briefly reached a new record high (40,257.24) before falling back to 40,000.90 to close out the week.
If all goes well and as planned, I won't need to tap my investment in mutual fund equities until I'm well into my 90's. But I monitor the markets each week, anyway.

I knew it traded above 4,000 but didn’t think it had closed above 4.

Not trusting the markets, I switched ours to simple interest. Pretty hard to predict as we all know, but I have been waiting for a crash. Not that I need their input, but many financial experts are predicting the same. As many on here have, I've seen a few.

I'm right on the doorstep of retirement, and have been watching the market, and my accounts with much interest lately. Been seeing big gains in the last months, and hope it continues, as that will make my transition much easier.
Seems like a lot is tech based, but that is driving a lot of activity on other fronts.

I switched in 2021. In the last 50 years I’ve gained 40% a year and have also lost 40%. I’ll never see big gains or losses now and will get 4-5% a year.Cowboy Gun Fan wrote: ↑Sat Jul 13, 2024 5:44 pmNot trusting the markets, I switched ours to simple interest. The Russel 2000 is getting more tech and media stocks.rickhem wrote: ↑Sat Jul 13, 2024 8:08 pmI'm right on the doorstep of retirement, and have been watching the market, and my accounts with much interest lately. I'm also too conservative to have what retirement investments I have invested in the stock market. I've had all mine in a Bond Fund for quite awhile. While I've lost out on some pretty big gains over the years I've also missed out on it's losses.Cowboy Gun Fan wrote: ↑Sat Jul 13, 2024 5:44 pmNot trusting the markets, I switched ours to simple interest. Hope it's OK to say, but between the Trump incident and the positivity at the Convention, it's fueling the markets.

Typically it goes up in the summer of election years and then drops the last 30 days before the election. Brokers make their money on the swings so it’s bound to drop some again only to rise back up.Cowboy Gun Fan wrote: ↑Tue Jul 16, 2024 4:28 pmHope it's OK to say, but between the Trump incident and the positivity at the Convention, it's fueling the markets.

Deplorable California 2A supporter.
Re: Dow Closes Above 4,000
I have a mixed portfolio. The stock part of it has done outstanding. I've seen the 'value' fall as low as -30%. I held and did not sell. It has always recovered and then some (a lot). Even after the last value drop in 2022, I was still double of where I had started in 2017. Today, that part of my portfolio is even yet quite a bit higher.

"US Consumer Sentiment has nosedived to its lowest point of the year and is at levels which in the past have been associated with recessions or bear markets. Unprecedented to see such a strong stock market (S&P 500 +20% YTD, 38 all-time highs) coincide with such a low reading."

Re: Dow Closes Above 4,000
I look at the Dow and think of it as a barometer of our nations economic health that has little to do with personal investments. I look at the Russell 1000 and 2000 for that. For an example the Dow is setting records yet both Russell’s are down which is reflected in the sentiment you mentioned.zaitcev wrote: ↑Thu Jul 18, 2024 3:01 pm"US Consumer Sentiment has nosedived to its lowest point of the year and is at levels which in the past have been associated with recessions or bear markets. Re: Dow Closes Above 4,000
Just for a heads up, the market had a rough day yesterday and even worse so far today. Presently, Dow 30 down over 800, Nasdaq 100 down over 500.

I just checked my Bond Fund and for it's size it's up a decent amount since I checked it a week ago.

Re: Dow Closes Above 4,000
The Dow hit 900 down a time or two, that I saw anyway, but rallied back to 610 down.
Two day total to over 1100 down though.
I can remember when 507 was a lot back in the 80's.

The sky isn’t falling. It’s Wall Street buying stocks for less so they can drive the price back up for a profit.

More heads up this morning. For anyone concerned, that hasn't somehow saw it yet.

Not concerned. Dips and peaks come and go. I have some cash, I might be buying in the dip this time around.
