come home from work at 3:30 PM grab a cold beer and crank up the Technics setup and throw on the new Peter Frampton album....CRANKED IT UP!
So on a rainy/ snowy cold Monday today I wiped the dust off of it all and proceeded to wipe the years away. Cleaned out a space in my man cave room
and set it up not knowing if the cool direct drive turntable would run and what shape the Frampton album among others was in.

Well couldn't ask for much more as both ran perfect after I got it all hooked up to an amp I had. Crystal clear sound with no typical recording popping or distortion even with the smaller speaker setup I used. I have larger ones but these sit in the enclosure and out the way. Plenty loud and they handle it too! So I grabbed a cold brew and cranked it up just like in 1976. Back then my wife would get home from work around 5 PM so had plenty of time to rattle the windows and refresh from a day of toolmaking work. At that time I was in my 3rd year of apprenticeship.

Forty, we are on the same wavelength today.
I took the opportunity to warm up the house with my apple mini pods. I can sync them for whole house sound. It was 70's and 80's hits for a couple of hours.
Unfortunately, I didn't play any Frampton. Perhaps next time.

I was the same back then. I have Bose 901's and a big enough power amp to get pretty loud. When I got them back in the 80's the store had a pair hooked up to a 1000 watt amp. He played the classical song (1812 overture?) with the cannon and cranked up it almost sounded like a real cannon going off. Owners manual for the speakers said "no upper limit for wattage in non-commercial use". Speakers are fused and I've blown them a few times with the bass turned up too high. Haven't had it turned on for a long time, just listen to tunes on my computer now. Everything is still hooked up, it's a nightmare of cables with a power amp, pre-amp, tuner, tape deck, turn table, CD player and the special equalizer that comes with the 901's.

Needs some serious dusting

I had a Technics stereo system as well. Likely Alice Cooper on the turntable though....

I'm inspired now! I've got the turntable and the whole setup as well as that Frampton album. I might just be a copycat Forty.

Dave...do you remember the large flat panel speakers that were made of a mylar/magnet construction around 79-80? My brother bought a pair of them and each one was like a 6 foot tall folding panel about 1 inch thick. He had a high powered amp also and man those things had very clean sound with deep bass. He loved to play Fleetwood Mac album on the setup.

Magnaplaner speakers, I think.
You can still get a set for a budget friendly $5k to 6k.
My BIL had a set way back when.

It would be 38 years ago for me, and it was a Harman Kardon system with JBL speakers. Now I have a wife, so I go out to my shop and crank up the satellite radio. I still have my HK and JBLs, but it’s far too dusty out there for them, so they stay safe in a box.

We had a Harmon Kardon up to a few years ago. Since it was analog it was replaced when we converted the home theater to digital. Kept the speakers, but I don't remember the brand. Back to 48 years ago... Moody Blues.

The amp, pre-amp and tuner are Yamaha, turntable is a MicroSeiki, other components are nothing special. Power amp is only 100watt rms but it was plenty loud enough for me. Funny though, I could play anything with the Volume cranked up but one song, Renegade by Styx had some heavy bass at the start of the song and if I didn't turn it down it would always blow the inline fuse to the speakers.

Had to do some searching for the name of that song and realized I hadn't listened to any Styx for a long time and they were/are one of my favorite bands. Guess I know what I'll be listening to for awhile.

Still have my Marantz 2215B tuner hooked up to a pair of Radio Shack speakers in my basement work shop. Most kids of today will never experience the quality of the sounds that came forth from our beloved audio brands. Or the quality of the music/ artists from the 60's and 70's.

Agree about that, there was some decent rock in the 80's but very little that I really like after that. But I remember watching Ed Sullivan with my dad in the early and mid 60's and he absolutely hated the rock bands that Ed was having on the show, of course the long hair didn't help.
