I love sunset pics... This one was taken of Miss Tina at the Net Lines at First Landing State Park, Virginia. We would rent a cabin late in the fall at First Landing State park and spend a week down there fishing. You were just outside Virginia Beach but not IN Virginia Beach and the cabins cost about the same for a week that you'd pay for a couple days AT the beach. I loved the shadows and the silhouettes in this picture.


This picture defines Tina's fishing habit. We were fishing a large reservoir and about an hour's paddle from the launch, and when I suggested we start paddling back (an hour earlier) she said "Just one last cast." When she made the last cast she got a strike and had to work that area for twenty minutes. Then one "Last Cast," and another strike... and working that cove... and as the sun set, "Just one last cast."


It's why I carried a headlamp, marker lights, reflective stripes on the paddle and the kayak, and illuminated GPS on my kayak.... wasn't the first time we paddled to the launch in the dark. Eh... we also did a lot of night fishing, so no worries.

Been there, First Landing is a nice place to get away from the traffic and some of the crowds of the beach. I grew up in Chesapeake and can tell you that the park has been vastly improved from when I was a teenager.

Great pictures and story BM ! We had a nice rainbow sunset Friday evening as the rain was moving out as the sun was starting to set. Of course no camera/phone in my hand ready to go!

Does a sunrise count?

Love the reflection in the window... I am a sucker for reflection shots, in the water, mirrors, etc. Of course Sunrises count... it's the colors that matter.



When I am back at the desktop... I'll have to find some.
Keep them coming folks, I know they are out there. We all need new wallpaper for our computers.

The sunset always looks better when you put a girl in it.

Briery Creek Lake was an interesting lake to fish. It was a man made lake, flooded as it, with trailed bulldozed thru the acreage to create deepwater channels and marked on the maps of the impoundment... then the project was delayed and the cleared passages began to become overgrown again. Contracts were in development to reclear the proposed channels and they flooded the area. MOST of the standing timber was left standing. You might be able to see in some of the pictures that the trees "Drowned" and the strumps are at or just below the water line. This is NOT a lake for fast moving boats. It was not unusual to hear a whining motor scream when the boat ran up on a stump and the motor came OUT of the water.

NEW Kayakers to the lake had to be cautioned NOT to paddle fast, as you could hit a submerged stump and roll, or worse, have the nose of the kayak ride up on a small stump and the nose of the stump run the length of the hull until it found a scupper. The small diameter stump could poke up thru the scupper holes in the hull and the kayaker was trapped without help from a second party to allow the kayak to be lifted OFF the stump.

Power boats driven UP onto stumps could be aided by kayakers by paddling a line over to another stump allowing the boat to be pulled backward off the stump by the people ON the boat, or they could be towed off by another boat, as long as the stump hadn't punctured the hull.

Trophy Bass lived in the lake, so follow the rules and it was worth the risk. For kayakers, it was a very safe place the fish, NO fast moving powerboats.


The first sunset pic, I took a dozen shots, trying to catch the perfect alignment. I managed to get a good one. I wanted the tree silhouetted and the sun balanced on the tree. Close enough.


The second one, I just had the camera, God provided the colors.


I've often told folks you just need a camera, an eye for the shot, and luck.

Werner Paddles asked kayakers to submit photos for an ad layout. They loved this one and used it years ago. I didn't have a release from the guys in the canoe, so they removed them from the background. They were good at it.




One last favorite from Briery...

Mountain sunsets and Arizona sunrises are nice.

When I first got interested in Photography, I bought a set of filters for special effects. At first, I used them a bit. I especially liked the one that put stars on light effects. (I can't remember now what it was called, but pinpoints of light became stars.) I also had one that softened the images, and a Portrait filter that softened the edges.

I used them less and less as my "Eye" became better, and I looked for natural color and composition and left the "crutches" as my photographer friend called them, in the bag. HE gave me a basic photography book for Christmas and I learned a few things, basic rules. LIFE took over and the hobby was put aside for Career and Family. Later I picked it back up, but I had forgotten a lot ... but I hacked away and got lucky here and there.

I still love sunrises, and sunsets, and Macro shots like Clovis.

Days are very short up here in our north woods winters and lakes make good places to XC ski. Here I am, out on the skis, looking at my back trail as the sun gets low in the sky. Everything is so quiet and not a house in sight. I might as well be in the wilderness, but, no, just a short journey back to the house before the sun goes down.

I love how quiet it is when the snow is thick on the ground and covering the trees. Our place in VA sometimes would get three or four feet... rare, but when it did, there was NO traffic on our tertiary road, it never got plowed until they caught up with the main and secondary roads, sometimes that meant it started to MELT before they got to us. Retired, I didn't have to worry about getting out. We prepared for the storms...

We were surrounded by state property. Both the state parks and the state forest. For a few days all you'd hear were the animals and the ice and branches falling. I loved it. Tina had a path to the barn and the chicken coops to take care of the animals but otherwise the ground stayed undisturbed other than the tracks of the deer, rabbits, squirrels..

The only other time I could find it that quiet was night fishing in the kayaks out of the big water.
