Early Morning...

The dog got me up early again because she needed to go out. Meh... at my age I don't really mind. I needed to go out by then too. This time of year Early Morning in Oklahoma is a great time. It's about seventy degrees, and the hens in the coop at the edge of the pasture are talking, the roosters are crowing, but the dang donkey hasn't started yet. It's still dark, not false dark, it's still dark. Still pretty quiet. I love this time of day. It's going to get Oklahoma HOT later... but it's nice out right now. She has finished her business and is impatient at the door to get back inside and back to bed, but I linger a bit. It's nice outside right now. I grin when I think back to the winter wake up calls at 5ish. Open the door and the ice cold hits her... she decides she can hold it.

I can relate. I find myself waking at about 5am or so most days. On non work days, I can roll over and just drift back to sleep, but not always. Sometimes I'll go make a coffee, and walk out the back door for a bit. There's about 370 yards to the treeline across the field behind the house, and that's often hazed over with ground fog. The little pond we have has vapor rising off it from the temperature differences that time of morning. Usually the crows are all over the grassy areas I mow, looking fur bugs or worms or whatever they keep pecking at, and there are usually a few bunnies along the weedlines around the edges of the cut grass. The best way to describe it is peaceful. Makes the coffee taste better too.

I'm up early this morning and although I could use more sleep I make the best of insomnia.
I'm enjoying coffee and cookies while the birds are deafening and the sun is just rising. Some
mornings the birds are so loud that they wake us. I can sit on the front deck and watch the
sunrise or the rear deck and watch it set. Retirement is good and so is life.

I often get up at 5 am to watch the sunrise and then maybe plink for ten minutes in my pj’s. Then after being up for two hours will go back to bed. As summer progresses and sunrise comes later I get up later.

If I slip out early without the dog, I can often see deer in the yard. I haven't hunted since I went into the Corps and we have a LOT of deer on the farm here, just as we did in VA. There is a Buck here that looks like the Hartford Insurance Elk. We have a lot of Bucks come thru, but this guy is massive. He has been around all three years, so he must know where to hide during hunting season.... or he gives the hunters the shakes when they see him and they miss. We also have two does that drop twins every year.

Early in the mornings before sunrise, the deer ghost thru, silent. I love the way they move thru the ground fog, without legs showing like boats. I get a kick out of it. Some nights when "Arthur" wakes me, I'll sit out when weather allows and watch for the activity and see them. A "nature" show without cable or a tv.

I have a game camera set up in front of the house. It's interesting to see what goes on at night. I have three red foxes that play under the yard light. I also have a immature barred owl that hunts large insects. I see deer, racoons, and possums every night.
In the evening we sit on the deck and listen to the critters around the lake.

We use game cams for additional security around the farm and enjoy the wildlife we see. We have a bunch of racoons so fat that don't walk, they waddle. They must weight 40 pounds. Deer, squirrels, coons, possums, fox, coyotes, skunks, armadillos, and so much more.
