Those Sonic burgers make you sick !

Post by fortyshooter » Thu Jul 13, 2023 10:29 pm

Had not enjoyed a nice Sonic double cheese burger in a while so picked up one and a single with one order of fries for me and the wife.
It's when I heard what the cost was over the speaker that got my stomach up in a knot! It was a 95 degree day and when I pulled up to the window to pick it up the girl looked ready to pass out from the heat. I handed my 20 bill over and got the two "golden" burgers plus a buck back and ask her how much they pay nowdays. She said 15 bucks an hour in this hot place.
Well the burger was good and didn't have to heat up the house cooking something but still shaking my head on why that bus to 1970 is taking so long to get here.

Ouch, doesn't seem that long ago that I could get 2 burgers, fries and a drink for $3.

I worked at a A&W/KFC in the early 70's and I think our most expensive burger was around $1. Drinks were like 10¢ and 25¢, owner would tell the carhops that unless it was a to go order all drinks were served in a mug as a paper cup cost him more than the pop. On a average order a quarter was considered a good tip, on a busy shift a carhop might make $5 in tips. Made minimum wage which was around $1.40, always thought it was unfair that being a cook I didn't get tips.

In the '60's we'd often go to Seattle to visit my brother and we'd go to Dick's for 19¢ burgers.

I remember buying a Big Mac Fry and Coke for 99cents. The AD splash at the time: 'get a burger, fry and drink for under $1'

Haven't been to Dairy Queen for 20 years but I had an urge for a brazier burger and a shake. Got a double as they are a bit small with fries and a large shake for $11. Was alright but not quite a good as I remembered, but what is.

Love a DQ Blizzard, used to get them all the time but now very, very seldom. My favorite, a medium Heath Blizzard has 860 calories, 37 grams of fat and 119 grams of carbs. Their Oreo Brookie blizzard sounds great but a medium has 1210 calories, 56 grams fat and 162 grams carbs. Add a burger and fries and you've got a day's worth of not very healthy calories in one meal.

I still eat hamburgers too often but no shakes or ice cream.

I miss the old days when I could eat whatever I wanted and as much as I wanted and stayed at around 150 lbs.

The Dicks in Spokane (same owners I believe) had the same .19 burgers. Remember the slogan, “ buy the bagful”?

My dad owned & ran a hamburger stand in Tulsa, OK called Hank's Hamburgers on Admiral Blvd.. The earliest prices for burgers that I can remember (paid attention to as a kid in the mid '60s..... ;) ) were $.20 a piece, and 6/$1.00. I was literally raised on cheeseburgers.

I guess I kinda became like Will Rogers. I haven't met very many cheeseburgers I didn't like. :D

Today's prices, on the other hand....... :o  :?

I have a DQ and a Culver's near me that get my business when I get fast food, which isn't often. The other chains are slop.

We used to like Sonic for the Chilli Dogs. Bop in and grab a couple chilli dogs, order of fries and a shake. We have stopped at two here in Oklahoma and the fare has been very disappointing. I ordered the Chilli Cheese dog and tater tots. The gal brought the order out and left. I started on the hot dog and was two bites in and discovered that there was no DOG. Chilli, Cheese and Tots on the bun. Talked to the manager and he said that is what I ordered. chilli Cheese Dog with tots.

The second time we visited another location, the fries were hard and cold and the drinks tasted like rust.
Haven't been back since and we have been in state for three years.

We have found both a Burger King and an Arby's that seem to take pride in the food and the Service however... so when we go out for fast food,...
Sit down? A couple places. A mexican and a barbque place.

The nearest Carl's Jr surprisingly has pretty good chicken sandwich. We, also, have a local Mexican restaurant that very good. Also a place with a good breakfast.

I think that even with the big chains individual owners/managers make a big difference. We got our first Carl's a few years ago and burgers were great at their beginning, thought they were one of the few chains that the burgers in the restaurant actually looked like the burgers in the commercials, now not so much. We have a Jack in the Box that's OK and lately I've been going to a Wendy's that makes a good burger. Go to a couple of independent places for a french dip and boneless chicken and another place for takeout Chinese. I don't go to sit down places very often.

I agree 100%. When we still lived in VA there was a Burger King halfway between home and Richmond along the main highway that consistently had the best whopper we'd ever had. Crisp fresh lettuce, firm tomatoes, nice hard onions. The fries were always hot and salty, and the service always with a smile. The dining room clean, floors spotless, and every table stayed clean and dry. The lobby cleaning staff did so with a cheerful attitude. NO horseplay or arguing among the staff behind the counters or behind the grills either.

Flipside, go deeper into town and stop at the same chain, you get "Whatchu Want" from the counter staff. Laughing and joking from the grill area and slow service. Too busy playing and yakking to concentrate. Cold fries, orders mixed up, and soft runny tomatoes. ONE visit and never again. Many of the poorly supervised fast food places you find lobby tables "Wiped AT, instead of wiped." The staff sullen and angry at the world." That environment will insure they don't get return business from us.
