He was walking away and being followed. I would have walked forward firing.

Only ever saw 2 in all my years riding on the big ranches. But they saw me lots for sure. Big cats.

I’m not sure if my natural instinct would be to walk towards the cat, but it sure as heck wouldn’t be to pull out my phone and start filming. If that cat were that close to me, I’d have both hands on the Glock and make the shots count!

There is a massive cat (+/- 9’j wandering the hills above our property. A neighbor got great video of it crossing the road near one of my friends houses. With our new puppy on our woods walks, the 12 gauge is also coming along these days. I’ve never seen one in person, but I know plenty have likely seen me. I have a very sharp and pointy (like a Fairbairn) fixed blade knife strapped to my bino harness so it’s always available when hunting. If a cat jumps you, getting your rifle on it is unlikely.

I don't remember when it was, but some time ago a politician was walking a trail in CA and changed HIS mind about Gun Control when HE was jumped by a Mountain Lion. He decided that, Yes there are times when citizens might need to carry a handgun.

I have only seen a couple of them over the years, but the best one was when I had one directly under my tree stand, putting a stalk on a big 5x5 whitetail that I thought I was about to get a shot at. The deer spooked, the lion missed, and I just sat there, wishing I had a lion tag.

Great story, the only winner here was the buck.

I have seen two in all my years in the woods. Neither encounter was close or threatening. Consider myself fortunate to have seen a cougar in their natural element and happy to have left them there.

I've only seen one Cougar (AKA mountain lion) .... a few years ago we happened one that had just been killed by two female officers within the city limits of Conroe, TX .... that was enough for me, I have no desire to ever see on in the wild

I"m pretty sure I've posted this before but here's a photo that was taken around 10 miles from my place. Pretty unusual to see so many together. I have never personally seen a cougar but my neighbor saw one once in his back yard.

Walking backwards...bad idea. Trip over an unseen rock, brush, etc. and you're cat food before you have time to recover.

Cat / Bear/Wolf country, I'd carry my 45 and several spare mags, IF there was some reason I couldn't carry a long gun.
And by long gun I of course mean a 12 gauge with Slugs.

Someone here told me cougars are fairly thin skinned so a smaller caliber round is probably adequate. When I'm out and about around here I carry my 9mm loaded with a combination of Underwood +P Xtreme Defenders and some good personal defense hollow points.

Ruger Alaskan with hot 45 Colt 250 XTP load or a"mild" 300 gr hammerhead.

When we could hunt with dogs in this state, you would always carry a .22 rifle to shoot a treed cougar. This did less damage to the pelt.
