Things I see on my little drive to the Post Office....

Yeah this morning to drop off some mail....a slow Sunday morning.

Pulling out of the Home Depot in front of me a guy with a HD rental truck with a HD rental trailer with a HD rental small garden tiller.
Not strapped down and the thing rolls from one end of trailer to the other at each traffic stop. Won't be much left of it by time he gets where he's going!
Then entering the area of my old childhood neighborhood about 3 blocks from the PO I glance over a side street and see an old classic tractor hitched up to a boat and trailer on side of that road and see one of the full sized 4 wheel ATV vehicles rolled on it's side in middle of the street. Now lucky if you can go 15 MPH in that area so who knows what happened there with couple guys standing around looking. On way back I come by there and see a vehicle trying to pull it back over.
Just another day in my little city.

As a former loadmaster, I cringe whenever I see unsecured cargo in a trailer or truck bed. I've had my share of dodging everything from pallets to tools to lumber that came careening off of a vehicle in front of me. The worst I ever saw was a truck that was leaving the Lowes parking lot. It had an entire pallet of pressure treated pine boards in the back of a pickup truck without a stitch of tie down. As he gunned it to move into the street, the pallet shifted backwards destroying the tailgate and rear suspension of the truck. I drove around it shortly after and wished I'd had a camera.

Not a loadmaster... but spent time in Marine Aviation... 13+ years. We tied down cargo in the various helos, and tied the cargo and helos down on the decks of carriers, and in the hanger bays and cargo bays. The ships pitch and roll violently in storms. If you have EVER seen a ship up close, they are taller than most apartment buildings... and I have seen waves break OVER the flight decks during North Atlantic Storms... Yup, we learn all about tying stuff down.

When we first got married, Miss T would ask, "Isn't that overkill?"
She quit asking.

A couple years after we were married, we saw a pickup on the side of the road, and about half the pallet of quickcrete slammed into the back of the pickup. He needed a new tailgate, tail lights, and a lot of body work.

Panic Stop. The inertia had snapped the pair of old worn kayak tiedowns the guy had used to secure the pallet of quickcrete on the trailer. The pallet slid to the front of the undersized trailer and the sudden stop had broken the plastic wrapping. Half the 80# bags of unsecured quickcrete became missles.

When we bought the UTV and Tractor, I bought the right tiedowns. NEW tiedowns. They don't move when we tow them. We also have the right trailer and tow vehicle for the weight and equipment we are towing. How many times have you seen a tow vehicle not large enough to STOP the load. Yes, your cherokee will PULL that boat, but will it STOP that boat and trailer.

People do stuff is all you can say. Last year pulling out of walmart i saw a guy in a big old model car pulling a four wheeler. He had the cars trunk up.. the four wheelers front tires were lifted up and put in the trunk. He had the handle bars strapped to the car so the front end of the thing wouldnt pop up and out of the trunk. So the back wheels were rolling along on the pavement behind and that was his tow method. He pulled onto the highway and off he went zooming on his way. I suppose its possible he got where he was going but it looked a tad sketchy ( well, actually it looked crazy)
