We went to the Civil War re-enactment of the battle of Aiken, SC today, it was a lot of fun and very interesting. Period weaponry and uniforms and very knowledgeable historians. There was a black confederate soldier and I learned 65,000 blacks fought for the south (don't remember that in school) some really good eats and homemade rootbeer. After the battle they pose for pictures and talk to the crowd they're some of the nicest folks you'll ever meet

Re-enactments can be very educational. It sounds like you had a lot of fun. But, while they may have been conscripted, it's hard to believe that sixty-five thousand black slaves actually volunteered to fight for their right to remain slaves.

We have a neighbor who participates in those re-enactments. Sounds like a good time OB. 👍
What CT said IS food for thought though, if it actually happened, as was told, then under what circumstances? A chronology of events would reveal more...
Glad you enjoyed the Aiken re-enactment. I think I would too.

Was towards the end of the war ,the blockade was working Charleston was starving Atlanta fell the south was beyond life Support. Why they served is known only to them and god. Didn't intend to stir controversy just sharing our day

Absolutely! An enjoyable day indeed!
No stirring controversy at all. Thanks for sharing. As said, I, would enjoy that. History has always intrigued me. 🙂

Interesting re-enactment. Would had liked to been there. I am a member of a Civil War site and there is an impressive historian there who keeps producing evidence of Blacks in the Confederacy. The way I understand it is very few if any were fighting on the front lines.

Not all saw it that way. Wondering if you have ever researched H. K. Edgerton?

Thanks for the reference. I read quite a bit about him this morning. He's colorful (pun intended) and controversial, if not convincing. ;)
