The poet and the cowboy. Tom T. Hall

I grabbed him by the collar and I jerked him to his feet
There was somethin' cold and shiny laying by my head
So I started to believe the things he said

I once went to a conference with a SWAT officer from our department. The first evening we attended the meet and greet in the lounge at the hotel. I jokingly asked him who he thought the most dangerous man in the room was. The lounge was filled with huge off duty officers, all over six feet, 200 pounds plus, most of them gym rats. They were all laughing, joking, back slapping and sharing anecdotes of their careers. He said he didn't even have to think... he pointed to an old man sitting quietly in the corner. "Him."

Two days later, the gray haired old man taught a class in the seminar loop. After that class I had no doubt he was right. I met several like that over the last four decades. Never let an appearance catch you off guard.

I am too old and worn to fight. And I prefer NOT to have my ass kicked if at all possible, therefore, the following holds true:

"there is no fair in fight, there is no cheat in win"

Surely not applicable to EVERYTHING, but my and mine physical safety, yup!

I have never forgotten that the Defensive Tactics instructor for our department, before he retired, was a slender, very soft spoken Command Sergeant. Looked so unassuming that few would ever give him a second look if he was out of uniform. Always smiling, handsome fellow, and looked like a salesman in a men's clothing store. He held FIVE different black belts, and hands as fast as a rattlesnake. He was no stronger than the average officer, but turned strength against you. His nickname was "The Painmaster." He knew every pressure point on the body, and every way to leverage your strength against you.

I would tell my recruits in the academy the worst thing you could do in his class was to ask, "What if?" Someone always did... it was hilarious. I was talking with a veteran officer once and said they had gone on a domestic call when they were both young officers. He had the woman and the Command Sergeant was interviewing the male. The male started to fight and the female turned violent as well. They were both fighting their subjects and it took the officer several minutes to get the female under control. The entire time he was worried about his partner and his violent male. Finally he turned and there was the Command Sergeant, sitting on the couch, with a foot in the middle of the handcuffed male face down on the floor. He said, "Don't worry, if you got in trouble, I would have jumped in with you." Of course, the command sergeant was a young patrolman then.
