Was talking to a friend back in Washington to wish a happy new year and he starts to cry about the new Magazine restrictions there and he sais my 6+1 glock 43 isn't good for CC because 10 +1 is the new standard.. I was kinda taken back and told him I've carried my little glock for 7 years without a failure and countless folks carry a 5 shot 38 snubby.. I like my G43 and think 7 is plenty and hope never to find out... So what's this "new standard" ?

I'm quite happy with my single stack Springfield XDS with its 7 shot mag.

Well, the "standard" in how many rounds to carry is just whatever someone thinks is the common amount. Yes, there are some legal limits in some areas, and those maximums may be perceived as the "standard", but in the end, carry what you are comfortable with, within your legal limits.
A lot depends on the perceived threat. If there were a lot of crimes being committed by groups of criminals, I might rethink the 7 plus 1 of my XDE in .45. I might also change my mind on carrying extra mags. With crimes in my area being predominantly committed by single assailants, or pairs at worst, I am OK with 7. The other consideration is the fact that, as someone not involved in criminal and sketchy activities, my chance of being the target of an assault are very small.

I agree. I’m far more likely to be shot in a tavern than a church.

I would love to see the statistics on the lifestyles of murder victims. Only someone with a PHD in psychology could fail to see the correlation between a criminal lifestyle and the risk of being murdered. Looking at murders in the news, it is most common to see that the victims were dealing drugs, members of a gang, or other signs of criminal behavior.

While not likely to happen to a non-leo here's an article about a cop that carries 145 rounds of ammo.

That would appear to depend on the particular tavern and/or the house of worship.

I know you meant that as a joke but it’s more true than most of us care to think about. Ogema has two taverns. One is for the young sets and has bar room fights. The other is for us older folks and if you get unruly you get thrown out. The most popular beer is sassafras.

Comedy very often gets to the truth.

I think the "new" standard came with the newer handguns capable of carrying 10 rds of whatever. 10 is the number most of the states that have restricted magazine capacity to that I am aware of.
After reading the story about the officer, you never know. I try to carry a reload for what ever I am carrying if at all possible. Realistically, I carry two guns if I can. Because you never know. A NY reload is a pretty good reload in my way of thinking.

And, unfortunately, there have been quite a few instances of horrendous attacks at houses of worship over the past several years. I'm sure it pales compared to the number at drinking establishments, but it is concerning enough that many congregations have instituted trained, discretely armed security teams. The instructor I had for my concealed weapons permit was doing a land rushing business in specialized training for church security teams.

Happily, I am no longer On The Job, and my little Glock 43 is my EDC. I don’t go to places where I am liable to get in trouble, and I’m very aware of my surroundings. If 7 shots aren’t enough, then I have 2 more magazines. If that isn’t enough, then I have ventured to somewhere I shouldn’t have been in the first place.

The way gun tech is going I wouldn't be surprised to eventually see a 9mm pistol that uses a 4" long single stack magazine that holds 100 rnds or more. Of course , that would entail integrating the 4th ,or possibly the 5th, dimension into the magazine which would also alleviate the weight problem. Shouldn't be too hard.

No, I meant 100. I already have a pistol with a 4" magazine that holds 12.

There's a video from a few years ago of a church with trained, armed security at services. Unfortunately the gunman killed two before being shot by a retired FBI agent, would have probably been more killed if not for his quick reactions and an excellent shot taken under stress.
WARNING the service was being live streamed so the video is very good quality and very graphic.

I’m a resident of a state who recently invoked the 10 round mag limit. Being somewhat old school even prior to the mag limit I carried my Ruger LCRX with the capacity of 6+0.

I do carry eight more cartridges on a Bianchi speed strip but I doubt I could do any kind of “speed” reload. I’ve done the Glock 23 and S&W Shield guns but I sure do like the flexibility of my little revolver. I can slip it into my pocket like the other day while at breakfast at a fancy place or put it into my belt holster when wearing the proper covering garment.

Colion Noir has a new video about this and related issues. I hope this doesn't violate the Forum rules, but if it does I won't be upset if it gets pulled. Worth watching, about a DGU in Atlanta, and 2 women who were under attack.
