In Shakyjakes topic Traces of TX he mentioned a bakery with a great history. This bakery is still in operation and it specializes in fruitcake. My wife and I oddly both love fruitcake so we took a look at the bakery’s website. We had planned to order a fruitcake until we spotted the Pecan Cherry Fudge Cake. Cherries and fudge also are at the top of our list of treats so we ordered one of those. Got a nice sale price plus an additional 10% for signing up for emails. 6-9 days to get it shipped but no worries as it’s for our personal consumption not any Christmas related plans.

Thanks Jake for leading me down another path of temptation I don’t need.

Fruitcake gets a bad rap. If well done, it is delicious. Years ago the wife of a guy at work used to make fruitcake cookies at Christmas time.

Those things were awesome.

Sadly, high carbs are off my list these days. I have to content myself with pumpkin pie made with Splenda and a pecan nut crust. It's pretty good, but doesn't stand up well against the full fat, full carb versions.

I haven't eaten fruit cake in several years .... its always been one of those foods I will eat and usually enjoy but if its not around, I don't really miss it

Haven't had a fruitcake since my Mom passed away back in 1991. Fruitcake and her chocolate pie were the best of Christmas!

Yeah, I mentioned in the Traces of TX topic that my mom made fruitcake when I was young. Her baking was world class, spritz cookies and another sugar type cookie that she would place some kind of chocolate mint wafer into, talk about labor intensive. Her fudge was wonderful and she made a candy called divinity that I didn’t care for but my sister loved it. But the best of all were her Mexican Wedding Cake also called Russian Tea Cakes cookies. A round cookie with chopped walnuts inside and powder sugar coated outside. When she was still alive and healthy she would make us kid’s favorite treat for Christmas. Of course all four of us had a different favorite so she was busy. Thanks mom!

Clovishound is right, good fruitcake is great, not so good fruitcake is terrible.
I almost pulled the pin on a fruitcake at Collins earlier this month. It's tempting, but I'm the only fruitcake lover here, so I probably will not order one.
All of those pecan and fruit cakes look and sound delicious. Pecan and apricot looks tempting.

I'm the only one that eats it in our home. I freeze half if it and consume the other half in a few days. They freeze quite well.

My mom would make many different cookies but my dad made the fudge and divinity. Divinity was OK but I preferred the fudge and cookies. She also made sticky cinnamon rolls that were my favorite.

I LOVE cinnamon rolls.

Me too, but without nuts/pecans/etc

My mom always made some with no nuts as one of my uncles was allergic to nuts.

When may youngest brother (five years my junior) started going to school our mom went back to work. She worked on Saturday so her second day off was Friday. Well, that became her baking day. She would make bread and cinnamon rolls. Coming home from school on Friday was always a treat with the wonderful aroma of fresh baked bread and of course a taste of the cinnamon rolls. She mostly made the sticky type with walnuts but sometimes did the iced frosting type.

Once in a while my grandparents (from my dad’s side interestingly enough) would be there visiting when we got home from school. I remember there always was a glass of bourbon in front of the three of them. Fun memories.
