After being gone for a week yesterday I found this pile of what I think is bear poop. It’s full of insects that look like termites (I think) so probably not coyote. And coyote poop usually had hair in it from the rodents they eat. The only reason I’m not totally convinced is the poop is on the smaller size of bear poop I usually see. Anyway, first sign of bear I have seen in this community. No tracks as we had a small shower which would erase any that might have been in the dirt. I checked the guest bedroom for Goldilocks but she wasn’t around.

Holy crap! Not what I wanted to see before lunch!

Did they smell of bear spray and have tiny bells in them?

I just found bear poop behind our building. Makes sense there are tons of blackberry bushes around us Mr. Smith accompanies our evening dog walks just in case.

I forgot to mention that I found this pile of doo-doo about 100 yards from my house. One of these days I might be posting a picture of a tree with the following carved into it with a knife.

This bear was hit on the road this morning. I see deer killed everyday but this was the first bear.

Gene, looks like a young one.
Have a buddy who lives around Green Bay and has a cabin north of there up on the flowage somewhere. They have a Big one roaming around the cabins. Steve's guess at least 600 lbs.

We used to go camping and fishing on the Flowage and I can tell you there are some really big
bears up there. We used to stay at a resort called "Black Bear", and there was a reason for that.

That's a biggn' for sure!
BTW, my neice lives up there right on the Flowage. There are also FAR more road kill deer in Wisconsin each year than are harvested.

I would say this one was around 100 pounds.

This one crossed in front of me as i was pulling out of my driveway yesterday morning on my way to work...

So if a black bear crosses your path, is it bad luck?

Only if it decides to eat you.

i f that was the case, I would have been out of luck a long time ago.

The thing is, where there are little-uns, mama might be in the area.
Our farm in VA was in an area called Bear Creek, very near Bear Creek Lake State Park / Bear Creek Lake State Forest.

Right after we moved in, before the grass had even come up and the porches were finished, Tina was sitting outside in a lawn chair enjoying the fall breeze while the four kids did homework inside. I was working a three to eleven shift.

They had cleared the home site by pushing the trees to the back and sides of the cleared acre and a half. Looked like a giant fence had fallen with trunks all the way around on three sides, the rest of the ten acres was behind it. Sitting there, as dusk rolled in, she suddenly heard a huffing toward the back of the lot. She sees a huge bear, scratching his back on the end of one of the logs. He was really getting into it like Balloo in the Jungle Book. "Oh Yeah, That's it right there."
She went in the house.

The game warden told her:

"That's just Bert, making his rounds. He won't bother you. They don't call this area Bear Creek for nothing. Just keep your trash up, don't leave dog food out, if you don't feed him he won't add you to his roster."

"Should I shoot him?"

"Only if you have a spare $10,000 for the fine, or can prove immediate danger. Really prove it." He laughed. "He really just wanders around eating and pooping. It's the moms with cubs you'd want to be wary about."

We saw a few of those over the years, and gave them all plenty of room.

Since I first posted this I have found two more piles of crap I believe are bear poop. One was full of grass and the other seeds and bugs like the first pile. Nothing fresh and again the size is on the small side for a bear which makes my pause with my claim. Still can’t think of any other animal that could leave leavings like this.

Look up the animal biology program in your nearest university and ask if you can email the pics. Most of the time the Profs are happy to make the ID and often pop the pics up in the classes and pose the question to them as well. Your fish and game biologists will also likely make the ID for you.
