Should have killed the engine and drop to 1st gear or reverse and hit the hand brake but don't think it had one. Just do something to take the speed off.

I remember when I was a very young teenager, I was with my brother in a fast food restaurant parking lot. We were stopped, probably parked, when the throttle stuck wide open. He immediately jumped out of the car and opened the hood and messed with the linkage while the engine was screaming. He kicked himself afterwards for not just turning off the key. Sometimes the obvious isn't so obvious when the adrenaline starts flowing.

Me and the wife who was girl friend at the time were sitting at the Shoneys drive in. Went to crank up the beast and had a carb back fire with flame.
Saw smoke coming from under hood and grabbed HER jacket to smother the flame. What was I thinking?? Save the car first and then......
