Had my 1968 Schwinn Orange Krate bike up for sale couple years ago and got a call from a local guy that wanted to buy it as a Christmas present for him and his son. Guy showed up this morning and the $$$$ deal was done.
Last night I was searching around and found a 1873 Uberti/Winchester 20 inch carbine in .44 Mag for sale. These are hard to find and it looked good and just finished up the deal. Want this for mostly shooting 44 Special and a few .44 Mags if needed to compliment my pair of 44 Special SA revolvers especially the 1871 Navy Open Top which is 44 Special.

My Henry 44 Mag carbine doesn't seem to like mild 44 mag with cast bullets and most likely the same for 44 Special with same bullet. Due to the bore size of .431 and the slower twist rate of 1:38 I have to really get the speed up over 1500 FPS to get a non key holing group.

Think the 1873 will hopefully shoot better and it will be period correct looking with that Open Top revolver.

Will see how it all works out!

73's Are nice rifles and I know that the factory chambered it in 44 magnum but I don't think that I would want to shoot a toggle link action in such a hot round. I am sure that most .44 specials would work well for a long time.

Not trying to start a toggle link controversy but when they were given a bad rap for shooting loose the materials they were made with were inferior to today’s materials. That being said they aren’t as strong as other actions but stronger than they once were. Im also sure Travelin is aware of that. Just making another comment

I hear you, back in 1968 or 69 a school mate had one that he rode to school. I never got one and I’m still not over it.

Just an aside, here, but here in Wisconsin we have a famous custom steel bike frame company called Waterford/Gunnar Precision Cycles which is owned by that same Schwinn family of Schwinn bicycle fame. I'm fortunate enough to own a dedicated single speed bike built up on a Gunnar Ruffian frame. I've actually ordered parts for it right from Richard Schwinn, himself. Be the very last thing with pedals I would ever sell and that's saying a lot given all the bikes and trikes I own.

Well I had 29 yrs of my drool all over it! Last several years it has been in my "man cave/computer room" and just been rolling it out of the way to get to things. Got decent money for it and it made another Dad and son happy for Christmas plus opened the door for the Winchester 1873 in 44 Mag which itself is a rare one.

This is the Schwinn Stingray 5 speed Fastback I had back in 1967 which was a year before the first Orange Krates came out.
I had a paper route at the time and paid $70 bucks cash for it at our local Schwinn dealer. It was my hot rod bike I also used when going out to collect the paper money. Had the big 26 inch bike for the paper route. I still have the sales invoice for that Schwinn!

The 1873 Winnie should be here about Tuesday or so and the purchase deal worked out great. A Cabela's in Texas had the rifle so I used my Cabelas Club card which happened to have $ 100 bucks of points on it so that was a nice discount. They shipped it out the next day Saturday and hopefully it all works out. Getting wall hanging space cleared for it and was selecting some 44 ammo to shoot.

Those 44 Mag versions must be a bit scarce as I could only find one review of it on Youtube and that was from Uberti in Italy! They were built as carbines only and blued along with extra heat treat on the receiver and action parts. A bit beefier than the other caliber 1873's

I had always wanted a Stingray when I was young but they cost too much at that time, I had to make due with a Huffy. Never really looked at the newer ones. Turned 16 in '68 so was looking for my first car, a '64 VW bug, paid $400 for it. Web search says one in good condition is now worth up to $15,000.

Congrats Forty can't wait for a range report. Good deal also. Better to have something you will put to use instead for a show piece.

Local pawn shop near me has the same Uberti only in 44-40 sitting on his rifle rack. It has been there for several months now because of the caliber. His price is very reasonable. Just hard to get that ammo right now unless you reload you own.

Glad I made your day with that picture! I think it was 1974 and my Fastback was still in my Dad's garage. I was adding a few goodies on my new 1974 Z/28 Camaro and a young kid down the street wanted to know if I would sell the bike to him. Of course I did for a whole 30 bucks! At some point when I had the bike I had a stud welded to the shift lever so I could screw on a Hurst T handle and the kid loved that! Yeah I should have kept that bike!
