I've used D-Con for years and have never experienced any foul odor, as they eat and retreat to somewhere else. I know they've eaten the bait because it disappears.

I agree. Poison is too indiscriminate to use when safer solutions are available. Rodents are prey for a large variety of other creatures. As a result, poison kills more than just the intended pest.

Last Spring, a feral cat that regularly drank from my backyard water garden died on my deck. I found it in the morning, lying in a pool of vomit and froth along with the remnants of a furry animal. I have no doubt about how it died.

Having a rodent eat poison and expire someplace out-of-reach would lead to foul odors that I'd rather not deal with. As it is, I think I can smell them in my basement loading room, and it is not plesant.

Mouse-X is not a poison. It lines the mouse’s stomach and they die of dehydration. Usually away from the house. If an Eagle comes along and eats the mouse it doesn’t effect them. It’s made from a specific variety of corn that only effects mice and rats.

Interesting, I'll have to look into that.
The guys that do the pest control at my job are pretty cool guys, and one is a shooter, so we end up talking about guns a lot. I'll ask him about that.

My friend had a pretty bad rat infestation in her chicken coop before we found a feeder they couldn't get into. She used Rat-X and we didn't lose any of the stray cats that hang out on the property. She did put the Rat-X where the chickens or cats couldn't get at it.

Slightly off topic but I have an interesting report on my new mole trap. Was at a neighbor’s a few days ago and she showed my a mole trap she has been having good success with. I’ve had a problem with them digging their tunnels around some shrubs I planted a few years ago. So I picked up a couple of the traps she showed me and yesterday I killed three of the little pests. Simple but effective trap, find a fresh pile of dirt, use the trowel to make a 5-6” deep hole, use the probe to find the tunnel and align the jaws of the trap to it. No bait needed. I haven’t checked the trap yet this morning but I bet it’s sprung.

Well after getting three in one day there hasn’t been any more activity. Not sure if I eliminated them all or not. I raked flat all the mounds so I can watch for new activity. That will tell me where to place the trap.

I’ve heard that before. It works for me as long as I think like a mouse and put it in their path. They like their backs to a wall or a narrow ledge. It works best to keep a low population in check. If you have a large colony it doesn’t work.
