I feel your pain. I hope that whenever you have your surgery that it goes well. A slip and fall on metal stairs is a tough way to suffer that type of injury.
As previously stated, at least you have those two manly men to help you out. After the surgery, you may feel a bit tied down to a few rooms. I hope the prognosis for your recovery is faster than predicted, but it probably is right on.

I have a similar recent experience. It seems that a ladder that I had a good relationship with for several years took a sudden and instant dislike to me in September last year. It thought it should return to the deck before I had finished coming off the roof. The results were instant and long lasting too.




After immediate surgery that afternoon and a few days in the hospital (it was a compound fracture) several months of excellent physical therapy, I can walk around the house without a cane. About three more months of PT and I can return to my part time job.

I wish you the same speedy recovery I have had. Good luck and keep us posted as we keep you in our thoughts.

Awe Dave, I'm glad you're recovery went well! I'm hoping my situation will be smooth sailing. I'm home tied to my room. My bathroom is a free steps away, but when you're on crutches, it feels like miles.

I have to share this with you Dahliathemeh, while we were waiting for the paramedics to arrive to give pain meds and transport me to the hospital the rescue freed my leg and held traction. The one man who did it said it was going to hurt, I knew it was going to. The oldest guy, who knew the healing power of laughter, said something I'll never forget. After the traction had been applied and I had given out audible acknowledgment of it, in the easiest manner of speaking, he looked at me and said, you know, if you were a horse, we would just take you behind that barn and shoot you. It was so funny that we all got a laugh, the pain was gone for a few moments and I knew these fellows had worked together before. Not bad for a small rural community all volunteer fire department in the middle of a work day, not bad at all.

Dave, when I was being discharged hubby nurse and I were going through the hall. This empty stretcher rolled out of no where. I just looked and told Mike did you see that? It's a ghost, without missing a beat the nurse says you don't see the person laying in the bed? Me and Mike looked at her she was grinning ear to ear, I said you have a dark sense of humor. I like that. So if I have to stay in the hospital after surgery, I think I'm gonna ask the nurses about strange things they've seen.
I also have to add they gave a cocktail of drugs. Top shelf stuff. They had to reset my my bone, it was REALLY out there. They told me I won't remember it. That was some of the best dreaming ever, I was down for 20-30 minutes it felt like I caught up on 12 years of sleep!

My best friend of 18 years came to see me. She gave me this birthday present. Knowing I'm always on the move, she thought this was funny. I'm still laughing!

I fell off a ladder and broke both my legs, right ankle, and smashed my left heel. After surgery and 5 days in the hospital they released me to stay with my sister. Next day I got a buddy to drive me to my home and install a short ramp to get in the house and remove the bathroom door so I could get the wheelchair through....called my sister to tell her I was staying home( she knew). 2 months in a wheelchair and I got a walker. Upright I got out to the truck but I couldn't put enough pressure on the leg to use the clutch. So I grabbed a stick for the clutch and with some creative handwork I was mobile again although it was a little scary at times. Next week I was back to work with the walker but no ladders.
I can't stay still either.

When I had my motorcycle accident in the early 80's I had to go in and get my driver's license renewed and was still on crutches, no cast just an ace bandage on my left foot. Lady at the counter was giving me a hard time about renewing. I told her I was taught to drive an automatic using only your right foot for both brake and gas petal.

She said it didn't matter, I would have to take a drivers test in an auto transmission car then said you'll have to take the written test also. At this point we got into a pretty heated discussion about why I would need to take the written exam (I was not a young kid at the time, was in my 30's) and she finally said I didn't have to take the written test but would not relent on the need for a driving test.

Came back in to take the test, passed the test and unfortunately the same lady was at the counter and said when I was able to drive a stick again I would have to take a driving test in a car with a stick to get the restriction removed. I knew it would be useless to argue with her and also that it would be several months before I would be able to drive a stick so I took my temporary and left, when my new license came it was clearly marked restricted to auto transmission.

When it was time to get it taken off I called first and asked to talk to the most senior officer available. Told him the story and added that a 16 year old kid could come in, take the drivers test in a auto and then go drive out and drive a stick. He said you're right, just come out and show me you can walk on it and I will make sure the restriction is taken off. He kind of admitted the whole restriction thing was kind of unnecessary, I would have been able or not able to work the clutch petal.

What was funny was they never took my motorcycle endorsement off so if I had a bike with an auto transmission I guess I could have driven it.

I had the casts removed but still had the boots on. I took off the right one when driving to use the gas petal but even so if I had gotten pulled over it would not have been pretty.

It seems pretty common here for threads to veer off course but your (and my) post didn't go too far off.

When I had my right knee replaced I needed to go to the store for some smokes (hadn't quit yet) and no one was around so I kind of sat sideways a bit in my Ranger so I could work the gas pedal with my left foot.

My dad had polio and his right leg was paralyzed so he built a device to allow him to work the gas pedal with his left foot. Always had to have it moved over when he got a new car, also had to go over to place in Seattle whenever he got new shoes to have them fitted with slots for his leg brace. The polio only affected his right leg but he never used a cane or crutches and was able to go up and down stairs and was very active. He was very strong, his biceps were probably as big as my calfs.

Friday is surgery, they are giving me titanium hardware for my ankle. Surgery is an 1 1/2, there is tendon reconstruction, and other things.
I made a 6 million dollar woman reference, and the doctor looked at me and said I don't know who that is. I told him go away, you're too young! (Playfully) By the way, I get a sweet knee scooter!
