In 1986 a pack of smokes ran about $1. At a pack a day that’s $365 a year. If you bought $365 worth of Microsoft stock in 1986 it would be worth around $800K today.
My neighbor who is my age is a heavy smoker and is always broke. I remind him of that fact every time he asks me for $20.

That is interesting. That is kind of how I stopped smoking. In the early 90's, I was probably smoke a pack and 1/2 a day. I remember getting a cartoon of smokes for about $7.00 on base. I was doing a fitness readiness test and did not do as well as I would like. As such, I was provided with the option of participating in an aerobic class. During that time, I stopped smoking as well. In order not to start back buying cigarettes, I started putting $25.00 a month in savings; so, I did have the money available, even if I wanted to smoke. Next time around, I did better on the fitness readiness test, and I still put the $25.00 a month into savings. But now, the $25.00 a month has grown to a few hundred a month. Just cutting out one bad habit has allowed me to live a more healthier and less financial stressed life. But, I do still drink beer.Sir Henry wrote: ↑Tue Mar 03, 2026 4:43 pmIn 1986 a pack of smokes ran about $1. At a pack a day that’s $365 a year. Quitting smoking helped me buy a couple of my Henrys...now that's incentive.

Re: Our Morning Coffee and Weather
I traded a smoking habit for a latte addiction. It costs me about the same amount each day. I lead a very frugal life until I retired. Now I live like a king in paradise.GFK wrote: ↑Tue Mar 03, 2026 5:12 pmThat is interesting. That is kind of how I stopped smoking. In the early 90's, I was probably smoke a pack and 1/2 a day.
