Wow. I have to admit I read down and found out what I was looking for but even then it took a while for me to see it.
Re: How well do you see?
Very cool. Right away you know there's something there to find, so I noticed the head, but that camouflage is incredible.

I noticed the head first too.

What kind of snake is it by the way. I don't recognize it as anything we have around here.

Nature can be like that. I put up that copperhead pic several times, they are hard to see even if you know what you are looking for... good picture.

I don't much care what kind of snake it is, I just wouldn't want to happen across it close up.

Snake physiology is amazing. I enlarged the pic and the image of the snake popped right out, but how it climbs the bark of a tree like that is astounding.
Coincidentally, I read this report this morning. Equally astounding.
A woman walking in her yard when a snake fell from the sky and wrapped around her arm followed by a hawk that wasn't willing to abandon it's prey. Yikes.

I had a Black Snake climb the steel pole in my garage building (similar to Gene's). I would keep a quart of oil right around the corner of it. One day I reached around the corner to get it and I was face to face with that Black Snake.

Re: How well do you see?
You guys had to mention snakes, just had to. Tina went to the coop to lock up the chickens just after dark last night and a five footer was in the coop.
I have stated over and over that we live and let live as far as snakes go as long as they stay away from the house, barns, and coops. This one was in the coop, crawling along the window ledge attempting to reach the nesting boxes where the eggs were. Didn't make it.
Miss Tina tossed it into the woods, something will dispose of it by morning.
As long as they stick to vermin, we leave them alone, try and eat the chickens or the eggs,
Sorry.

Re: How well do you see?
I was once down at the barn, hanging a 4' fluorescent light.
I had it hung and was finishing up the wiring, and my brother walked in.
Looks up and says how long has he been there?
Me; I looked at him and said, who, where?
He points over in the corner, up in the rafters, less than 10 ft. away.
I turn and see a pretty decent size rat snake hanging out over there just watching me.
I said Idk, I never knew he was there til you asked.
As long as I see 'em they don't bother me, I'll just usually give a wide berth and go on.
Unless the are venomous and in the yard I let live.
