Finally Starting on the Berm

I still have three trees that need to come down. The hard part is finding anyone who will do the work. It took us two months to get a welder to come over and blow six holes thru the three fence posts for the gate hinges. (Two holes per post)

Three different welders accepted the job and then didn't show. She offered more than fair rates for the work. Finally, she stopped off to ask a neighbor for a recommendation, and her niece's fiancee was down from OKC, he couldn't believe it. He borrowed the cousin's welder (His aunt lived nearby) and came over and knocked out the job in ten minutes. He said unemployment took away the need for half the country to work.

Great progress on the range Marine. It's almost inspiring. I think I'll fire up the loader tractor today.

I love the RR ties and dirt. Very good backstop.

Thanks for re-posting BOM. This is a great re-read and very helpful for my project. I didn’t think to use railroad ties for my search, I just looked thru the range talk topics. Then I searched your posts but that didn’t work for me either. Nice to be able to remember your project from start to where it is now.

Yup, I put in New Range, and the search function said, "The terms new and range are too broad, (idjit) try something more specific." Then it hit me and I put in Railroad ties and got it on the first page of listings. LOL.

Question? If you just stack those cross ties you will have an open joint all the way through the pile that a bullet could get through. Whereas if you halfed one the joints will be closed(offset) and much safer...........Good luck with you project.

On MY berm, the RR ties are meant as a retaining wall to help contain the berm, which is a large pile of thick dirt. They are not the bullet impact area, but just there to contain the impact area made of dirt. They interlock and are spiked together to give the wall strength to keep it from falling over. It was never my intention to shoot into the berm wall of RR ties. The wings may take some "Splash Impact" from reactive steel, but it will flattened lead, or jackets shed from hollow point bullets. Not ballistically sound, and if they do try and go thru the cracks in the RR tie wall they will be at very low velocity and not go far, likely drop just outside the wall if they make it thru the crack.
