computer memory

Ran across this jpeg looking at some old photos for the meme thread.

Amazing how much cheaper computer memory has become, you can get a 2 terabyte solid state hard drive for around $100. 2,000,000 megabytes in 2 terabytes.

In 1984, I was very happy to have work provide me with my first hard drive. It was 7MB + 3MB removable platter. The whole unit was the size of small top loading washing machine. The removable platter was top loaded.

I remember the first hard drives that had removable platters. They held 1 MB and were larger than a Thanksgiving dinner platter, and heavier than the turkey that went on it.

Now a couple hundred GB fit on a micro SD about a quarter the size of your thumbnail. All for the price of a dinner for two.

I bought a 20 meg hard card for work computer (I think around $800) and wondered what I was going to do with all that space.
