A Scene From MASH

This has got to be one of the best scenes from MASH, and it must have code written into the broadcast because it made my screen fuzzy. I had an uncle who had a gift for music, he could play anything, and well. He tried to teach me Guitar before he left for Vietnam. I learned to play the acoustic, six and twelve string, and you knew what I was playing. I finger picked, but never learned to read music. I was a John Denver fan and could play his top hits. Could pick Dust in the Wind and some others... but was just never able to hit that groove. His quote here hit it on the head. "I can play the notes, but I cannot make ... the music." I could play the songs well enough, but they didn't come alive. I have always admired the gifted true musicians.

I sold my Ovation Custom Legend twelve string to fund needed items for the kids, they always came first. Never bought another ... I recognized that really good was out of reach. I focused on other things.

I had the same problem with photography years ago. I knew a lot about the technical aspects, but lacked the ability to translate the art I envisioned in my mind onto the film. I'm doing better now, I think/hope, but I still struggle with it.

The Pup has the "eye" for it, but not the technical bent.

I see some of the same in my leatherwork, but I'm just starting. Folks will tell me how good it looks, then I'll see a true artist's work and it seems alive. I'm not giving up on the leatherwork, worst case I could stick to geometrics and plain dyed work that is useful. Sheaths, holsters, belts, and the like. But music, whether it's singing or intrumental... Played by someone with a true gift can touch you. I never had that gift.
