I actually saw this car race on Woodward Ave. waaaay back when we used Woodward as the worlds largest dragstrip. 4 lanes north and south for 8 miles. I had a '63 Dodge with a police interceptor engine in it, push button Torque flight tranny, It would walk all over Mustangs and beat most Goats and Chevy SS. I can honestly say that I never got a ticket for drag racing or speeding and had a blast.
Then I got married and became responsible, man I miss those days.
They have a reincarnation of that era today, once a year the hold The Woodward Dream cruise, about a million people and thousands of classic and custom rides. If your ever in Motown the middle of August, check it out.

Yep those were the days! The engineers from the big Three would try out their new HP packages on Woodward.

I had a chance to cruise Woodward during the Ford 100 birthday event while up there with a bunch of Mustang guys back in 2003.
Drove my 2001 Mustang Bullitt up there and had a blast! Had a few runs off the lights too!

Best story I had read was back in 1965 when Chrysler was planning on detuning the 426 Race Hemi for production street use in 1966.
Tom Hoover the head Hemi engineer installed the first 426 Street Hemi in a 1965 Dodge Cornet convert with bang shift Torqueflite.
Then they hooked up a utility trailer behind it with an empty refrigerator shipping boxes and weakend the springs like it was carrying a heavy load.
On Woodward at night they would cruise up along side a GTO and Chevelle going at it and just blast away from them! The look on their faces!!!

A friend would take his dad's '56 DeSoto to Woodward, 5000 lb.+ car that would beat most GTO's, oh did I mention it had a 392 Super red ram Hemi under the hood :D

My Father has a 1954 Chrysler New Yorker Deluxe with the Imperil engine. That was a heavy
car and I would take it into the city and drag race it, (without him knowing of course), and
that thing would win all the time. I don't know the size of that engine, but it was big.πŸ˜πŸ‘
He finally bought me my own little Chevy six cylinder coupe and gave me a payment book
for it. He never said much, but my guess is he knew.πŸ‘€
