I received a letter from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources yesterday. They asked if I would like a special license to kill any and all deer on our property. It seems the Chronic Wasting Disease is out of control and they want to eradicate all the deer in a very large area around our property. Many miles in fact. They say if I apply for the permit I can kill as many as I want, either sex, and all I have to do is have the carcass inspected for the disease. If the deer is free of the disease, I can keep the meat, if not it is destroyed. The permit is free.
Well, last April they had a special hunt by what they called, "expert sharpshooters", who used laser sights and worked at night. They killed most of the deer. I have seen one deer since, and it looked sick, and that was last Fall. We used to have four or five a day in our yard.
I don't think I am going to apply for the permit. We generally only allow bow hunting in our woods due to the proximity of several homes scattered around the lake, and I'm too old to pull the bow string anymore. Besides, I don't want to do the hassle with the authorities to have it inspected.
Sad.

Well, I have two friends that I trust that want to participate in the kill. I have notified all neighbors that we
will indeed be killing deer on my property and may have to track down a wounded deer on their property.
They say to go ahead.
After the deer kill the DNR did last April, there aren't many deer left, so we may not
even see one, but if we do...........
This is really sad, but I guess necessary. The Chronic Wasting Disease is running rampant in the area.
This will not be a happy hunt.
It starts Saturday and runs for eight days.

having run a hunting club during a breakout of Chronic Wasting Disease I've seen it first hand .... seriously thinning the herd is about the only way to stop it .... next will come several years of much lower kills as the herd repopulates the area
