Trial run for the old 870

I took the 870 out to test fire it and see if it patterned where I was aiming. Not all shotguns shoot POA so I try them to make sure they do for me and if I have to make any changes. This one is hit centered perfect for left and right and centered the pattern right at the top of a 3" circle. I like a shot gun to hit slightly higher than where I hold the bead. A low shooting shot gun I don't care for and have to make changes. This gun fires and ejects great just like they normally do and the pattern looks to be a little tight for a modified barrel. I found a slight crack in the butt plate which I can easily repair but a friend of mine has a box full of butt plates and there is some Remington ones in there that I saw the last time I needed one. So my 870 family grew by one and now the hunt starts for a corn cob 16 Ga. I am looking for a 30" 12 Ga.plain barrel 2 3/4" chambered barrel if any member has one for sale. I can't believe I am now on the hunt for shotguns being a rifle shooter. These old 870's in the $200 or a little more price range are steals in my book when you look at new guns and the bad workmanship. Here is my 870's as of now.
Top to Bottom----12 Ga. National Wild Turkey Federation 30th anniversary made in 2003---- Wingmaster 870 12Ga. modified made in '76 and was unfired until last season---- My most recent 12 Ga. made in '55 modified barrel----My favorite is my 20 Ga. corn cob that is in like new condition made in '53. 28" full choke. I have a 12 Ga. butt stock on it to keep the original nice. The NWTF gun I may change it to a corn cob fore arm and stock.

I'm with you on a gun that shoots a little high. Makes for a good pheasant gun.

Speaking of those corncob 870s, the 20 is the one that I've seen the least over the years and, of course, that's the one that would be of the most interest to me since I did most of my bird hunting, back in the day, with a 20. If I came across one like yours, I'd have a hard time passing it up, even though my bird hunting days are over.

nice collection .... during my career with NC's Dept of Correction the 870 was (and it probably still is) the shotgun they adopted for department wide use .... with certified employees required to recertify once a year with rifle, pistol, and shotgun, their 870's were subjected to decades of heavy use .... they held up well
