This is the part I don't understand - I mean if it was free what would have been the reason for the 'fit' ?

For the last several weeks I have had an opportunity to pickup a .30-30, pre '64 Winchester model 1894, and I did not act on that opportunity quickly enough. The rifle belonged to a friend who inherited an immense collection of rifles, shotguns and hand guns from a relative who passed away last summer. I spent several hours assisting my friend in inspecting the firearms to determine if any were loaded (2 were), researching the values on many rifles and shotguns, and disassembling/cleaning 8 guns that I thought were the most valuable within the entire collection. To show gratitude, my told me I could have any 2 guns from the collection. I chose just one gun, a model 1899 .30-40 Krag carbine. About 3 weeks later I looked at several more guns from the collection that I had not seen before and spotted the Model 1894.
I would have taken the rifle home that day, bit I knew my wife would "pitch a fit" if she knew I had acquired an additional gun ( I own 16 long guns) even if the gun was free. Yesterday, my fried called me with the outstanding news that she had sold the entire collection to an FFL dealer for twice the amount he had offered her 2 months earlier, and had loaded up the entire collection into his van and drove away. I guess I won't have an opportunity like that ever again.
