I've wanted one of these for some time, but every one I came across was either rusty, ridiculously over priced, or just plain beat. Split/cracked stocks are also very common. Last fall, another member here (Redthies) mentioned having one he may part with. It had suffered the usual crack in the stock, but there was an aftermarket replacement, and the metal/bluing was reported to be in good shape. I got excited, a deal was done, and a few days later, I received a package from the other side of the country. I'm happy to say it arrived as advertised (I've been stung a couple of times and won't normally buy anything I can't handle first).

James, thanks again, and thank you for not throwing the original stock in the trash...try as I might, I just can't warm up to the laminated one.

I have changed up the sights, but haven't had a chance to sight it in yet. I've only put a handful of rounds through it...used it as a tool, actually. LOL, my "function check" was using it to "drill" a few drainage holes in the bottom of our burn barrel...

I took it apart, cleaned and oiled all the steel bits, and removed the scope rail. All was good inside, and the gas system showed little sign of use...pretty clean carbine, built in 1981. I can see why the O.E. stocks are so prone to cracking...they're really thin in places. This one has been cracked, stripped, and repaired at some point in its life.
I set about digging as much as I could out of the old repair, and injecting some epoxy. After cleaning that up, I rubbed in a few light coats of linseed oil (50/50 mix of BLO and mineral spirits), and figured this will be good enough 'til I can find a suitable walnut replacement...

congratulations indeed .... I had a late 60's vintage Ruger 44 Carbine as a companion to a Ruger Blackhawk .... used them bear/boar hunting in Western NC ... loved the Carbine, hated the Blackhawk .... sold them both and have regretted parting with the Carbine every since

I always had a 'fascination' for the Ruger .44 carbine - and almost bought one LONG ago but other gun interests at the time made me forget about it.
I often wondered why they never made it in .357 Mag.

Thanks. I will get to that at some point (hopefully soon). My nephew just bought back his grandfather's Winchester 94 in .44 Magnum, so when he is able to stop by with it, we'll set them both up the same day.

That looks really great, Roddy. Talk about rehab!
