Marlin 39A-DL "Squirrel rifle"

Post by bandit1250 » Mon Jan 28, 2019 5:48 pm

I told my fellow members who asked to see the final work when finished on the 39A that I have been working on for almost 9 months that I would post pictures. In that amount of time I was back and forth on other projects when I would get sick of this one. This one has really tried my patience and I am glad it is now finished and can go home in mid-March. I just told the owner on the phone it is done and he sounded happy that it is ready. I told him it is not the best job I have ever done on a stock but it definitely is the hardest and the most work involved of any of the others. I took some pictures this morning and will post them now. I just showed it to my wife and she said she can't believe how well it looks. I think she just wants something. ;) I told my friend that squirrel in the side was a real pain to work with. The checkering turned out much better than I expected it to. The finish has to cure some more and will smooth as it ages. This is his shooter grade rifle and it will get used and possibly get some some dings now and then. I really like the thinner white spacers I made for it better than the thick ones. Let me know what you think about it.

Outstanding work, Bandit! Simply, great. You're wife is so right about how good it looks! That lucky owner will be blown away. Wow!

Wood is simply putty in your hands, Bandit.

You might be "sick" of this project -- it turned out absolutely beautiful. The new owner might be happy to hear "that it's ready." Boy, will he ever be happy WHEN HE SEES IT :!:

Wish that stock were on my SGC. I'd take my rifle out of its storage bag, and prominently hang it on the wall.
Love that squirrel.

I can't imagine anyone not loving that rifle, myself, included. Hey, maybe you should tell the owner that you got abducted by aliens and they kept the rifle, they were so impressed. Okay, let me think of something else. :)

That is a beautiful piece of wood and you did a great job at letting it show through. Nice!

Yep - good job and looks great!
Gives me ideas for my own mod 39 - but probably just a good stock refinish is as far as I'll go with mine.

Looks to me as if you carved that stock around a piece of art.
Thank you for sharing it.
