given, powerful can mean several different things; such as, longest range or one that generates the most impact .... what is the most powerful rifle that you have ever owned .. ..

for me, it would have to be one of two .... our Henry 45-70 and our Remington Model 700 300 WBY Mag

No, not in the UK. I had it when I was still in South Africa. I was a member of my local Commando - similar to an army reservist, I suppose - and we were all issued with R1 service rifles as part of our kit.

Any semi/full automatic centrefire pistol or centrefire rifle is banned in most areas of the UK. We can only get rifles that have been made or converted to single shot operation - known as straight pull rifles. You need to re-cock the bolt after each shot. Normal bolt action rifles in any caliber are still legal to buy in the UK, however.

.22 semi-auto pistols and rifles are legally available in the UK. Centrefire pistols (e.g. 9mm etc) are available in Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man, which is a sore point with a lot of UK gun owners, but that's another story!

Ill chime in with a Savage Bear Claw in 338 Winchester Mag followed by a 45-100 Sharps and a 45-70 or two or three hmm I think theres 4 of those guys in there.

I'll admit that I am a somewhat retired recoil junkie. For me it's been not so much the cartridge as the gun to shoot it. The 30-06, for instance, is normally a rifle cartridge and some folks find the recoil in a rifle to be a little stout. Imagine shooting that in an Encore pistol with a 15" barrel. Same for shooting the 45-70 or the 444 Marlin (my fav) in an Encore pistol. The concussion on those would literally blow insulation off the roof above me at the range and more than once, blew the spotting scope off the bench. And then there's the 460 or 500 in a S&W revolver ...

Have cut way back in my old age, now. I still shoot a 44 mag or Trapdoor 45-70 loads in our Contender when I feel the urge for something with a bit more bite than a 357. For those of you shooting the nasty stuff on a regular basis, let me tell you that it can catch up with you in old age in the form of arthritis, detached retinas and so on. There is a price to pay and not talking about ammo, here.

Or more commonly know as the Marlin 444.
Out to beyond a 100 yds it has more K-O than a 338 Magnum,
and at 150, still more than 300 H&H, or a 30-06.

Not all that powerful, but a thumper nonetheless is my Marlin 336 in 35 Remington. It sends a nice and fat 200 grainer down range at about 2100 fps.

Have thumped a few deer with the ole 35, never lost one.
Heck only one made it more than 25 yds. after being introduced.

I have friends who legally own and enjoy shooting legacy black guns; but for me, pistol caliber lever action rifles and SAA revolvers are much more interesting and entertaining.

Good thing, too; that gun and others like it have not been allowed in CT for several years.

I will take the Henry and the Beowulf this weekend at the hernando rifle range in Brooksville this weekend. I have only tried one gun shop so far for 41 ammo and he only had HSM cowboy action 210 gr semi wadcutter lead is this ok to use. I was wanting jhp?

can't speak for a 41 but we've used HSM Cowboy Action Ammo in both our Henry 44 Mag and 45-70 .... it performs well in both of them

Mine would be the sporter model of Browning's B.A.R. in .30-06, then again, my type 99 Arisaka packs quite a punch with that 7.7x58 pill.
In pistol caliber, it would be an H&R Handi-Rifle in .500S&W magnum, but that's a single-shot.
My favorite big bore pistol caliber rifle is a Puma (Rossi) M92 in .454 Casull. So much fun...

Just picked up a beautiful late vintage Marlin 444SS, just when I was trying to swear off the big thumpers. Oh, well. Love the 444 Marlin cartridge and have experience shooting it. Even had some old ammo laying around. Besides, every girl deserves to have a grizzly bear gun, right?
