Stock change

Post by bandit1250 » Sat Jun 10, 2017 8:08 am

I made a stock about 30 years ago for a 700 Varmint model 223 I had at the time. It has been gone for a long time to another owner who bought it to build a bench rest rifle off the 700 action after I had shot the barrel out after several prairie dog shoots in Montana. I kept the stock and it has been on several 700 Varmint models over the years and is now on a late '90's 223. It has nice wood under the paint I put on it and I am going to strip it and do a finish job on it and I have a Remington 40-X factory stock I did a lot of work on to use on it until I get it ready to use again. I had my SIL make a new rail for the bottom of the stock with out the groove for the adjustable hand stop which I would never use any way. I added a thin rubber rifle pad and did a refinish to duplicate the factory 40-X finish. This stock was for the single shot 40-X and has the solid bottom. This is good for me because I converted the 700 repeater to a single shot when I bought it. I like single shots much better. This stock also has adjusters in the fore end for tension on the barrel to change barrel dampening to help tune the accuracy of the loads. We will see about that. I have a feeling it will shoot better backed clear out and free floated. I have recently found a steel ADL 700 trigger guard for it that is hard to find. I hate the plastic trigger guards. I have a little fitting to do then I will be ready to make the switch. May not end up liking the finished wood better than my painted stock. Oh well, they still make paint. ;)
