Where Did the Chief Go?

I bought two Savage rimfire rifles within the last few months and was disappointed to find that the Savage trademark of so many years, the Chief's head, was not to be found.

It used to be on the buttplate or perhaps the stock grip cap. Not there now, at least not on the 93G or the 64F I purchased.

Woke? I don't know but I always thought the Chief's head logo was classy.

I think political correctness is the reason…

It was a PC thing after Vista Outdoor bought Savage.

Sadly, such may be the case.

It was likely just a calculated business decision. The relationship between Mr. Savage and the Chief really is remarkable, but the two form an unfortunate combination for 21st century firearms marketing. Savage was, in fact, the gunmaker's name, but the word "savage" has another meaning, which could be very offensive to the indigenous population when used together with that logo, even if the backstory is known. It wouldn't be the first time evolving consumer perceptions have influenced boardroom planning.

You are probably correct. The Washington Redskins became the Commanders. Newberry College in Newberry, SC, was forced by the NCAA to change their names from the Newberry Indians to the Newberry Wolves. Is MLB in Cleveland still the Indians? I am certain that other examples exist but still, I thought the Chief's head was classy.

Wasn’t Washington The Football Players for one year? I went to Sacajawea Junior High in Lewiston, ID and we were the Savages. They are now the Braves.

Words have meanings that matter because we are a community. Go Braves.

To me Braves, Chiefs and Indians are okay but Savages are derogatory. Go Braves.

Way back in the day when I worked for the firearm wholesaler I was given a promotional wall plaque from Savage showing the Chief and the name Savage on the bottom. I had it in my little reloading setup in my house in the late 80’s. I have no idea what I did with it and sure wish I had it today. It would look great in my current reloading room which is probably six times larger than back then. Dumb me for sure. :(

Can’t agree more with Sir Henry that the word (name) Savage is derogatory and Braves, Chiefs, etc are complimentary.

As I recall my plaque looked like this.
