.357 mag vs 35 Remington

The 35 Remington has been a favorite cartridge of mine for deer hunting in Pa. and very popular in Pa. with other hunters that like the pump action Remington's and lever Marlin's chambered in that fine old woods cartridge. That round nosed 200 gr. bullet just works far better on deer than what the ballistic charts would make you believe. The 200 gr. bullet has been a favorite bullet for that cartridge for years. I like the fact that if you are a reloader you can load it to 357 velocity or even a little less or go full power loads for the 35 Remington. I have a lot of casings and bullets for the 35 so I have kept mine even though I thought of selling it several times. Mine is a pretty much a mint condition 336 Marlin SC. The SC has the 20" barrel with the 2/3 length mag tube and the capped fore end instead of the fore arm band and full length mag tube. Capped is usually a little more accurate so it seems. Here is my 1960 SC with a 1-4X20 Leupold scope which works very well in the Pa. woods.

I also have a pump, but mine is a Savage.
The 35 is all a man needs for around here.
I have shot deer from 70-140 yds.,and only one ran more than a couple yds.
Haven't shot the Savage in a couple years, but the two Marlins get shot regbutwith a cast 200 gr. pill.
Those also do a number on 'em.

Well, to add to the conversation there's always the .300 Savage. Often overlooked cartridge that fell out of favor when the .308 came along:

I don't have time to shoot what I have now.
I thought of another point for keeping the 357.
I try to be a promoter of the shooting sports. A 357 lever rifle is one of the most accessible calibers for lever silhouette.
The 357 is not going anywhere soon even if I don't shoot it. It looks great on the rack at the range.

Agreed no shoratge of 357 levers at my house I have 4 of them and enjoy all 4. I have room for more if Henry comes out with a sidegate 357 even if its a brass model. Bandit Ive seen that rifle and fence post before still looks good. So does the scenery

I notice that the Hornady 200 RN gets mentioned.
I like the Spear Hotcore 220gr and 180gr FN.
No need for fast high pressure loads.
220 gr bullet doesn't need to much MV (1600fps) to knock down a 200 meter Ram target.

I just checked a Nosler manual and found that they offer 200, 225, & 250 gr bullets in .358 diameter .... they include load data for :

358 Winchester
350 Remington Mag
35 Whelen
358 Norma Mag
358 Shooting Times Alaskan

but the do not offer load data for 35 Remington .... I didn't expect that

Also there is the tube mag situation.

I prefer the forearm capped aesthetic but my 336c is the only 35rem I've ever seen in the wild out here.

Most are, my sil's grandfather has a Rem. 600 bolt action that isn't.
I think the original 35, which was a semi auto and I think they also have a magazine.

The old Remington pumps had the spiraled tube to keep the rounds from being bullet against primer. NCG and some members here probably remember the Remington Model 14 and the Model 141. There is a Speer .358 180 flat nose and also a Speer 220 gr. shaped like the 180 you can use in levers. Get over that weight and expansion may be none at all on exit. I did a little test on bullets firing off the primers and I will post on it one day. But I will tell you now it didn't fire a single primer off. I passed up a Savage pump in 35 and now I wish I would have grabbed it up.

I've used 158 .357 mag bullets in my 35rem.
I've also thought about using a Hornady 358 200gr RN for my .357 mag.
It would have to be a 38sp to cycle, a 357mag case has to be seated past the ojive to cycle.
