My favorite deer rifle
Re: My favorite deer rifle
The 50 cal Flint is a really sharp-looking rifle, and especially so that it is "scratch built." Also your pictures are great, especially the middle close up. Thanks for posting!

Re: My favorite deer rifle
“Beware the man with one gun, he knows how to use it.” .... somehow I can't shake that thought as I open the door of the gun safe and gaze at the various rifles therein .... we have other rifles that I really like and use but if forced to only have one rifle, I'd have to go with our 40+/- year old Remington 700 BDL chambered in 300 WBY Mag .... the reason is simple, it is capable of making both the short and very long range shots that are common to various areas we hunt ....

Re: My favorite deer rifle
My favorite hunting rifle is a 1981 94 Winchester in 30-30. Lever guns are just fun to carry in the woods. The rifle I actually hunt with 90% of all hunting trips is a Browning A-bolt stalker in 25-06. I have taken deer from across a bean field and right under my stand with the 25-06, it never let me down when I did my part.
Re: My favorite deer rifle
My one and only center fire rifle. A Winchester model-94 "Trapper" in 30-30.
I don't hunt any more so it sits in the gun safe.

See-thru mounts are da bomb.
Although I don't use them to hunt, I have a soft spot for 30-30 lever guns. I think if I don't check on them regularly they multiply in the dark.

Actually, this Remington 760 Gamemaster .30-06 from 1971, pictured here with the Marlin, has taken more deer than any other rifle that I own or have owned. I started out with no scope but then around 1977 I put the scope on with the see-through mounts. It's a cheap scope, an Armsport which I only paid $45 dollars for back then. I have had to refocus it since then but it still is waterproof and I use it sometimes when I sit along a tree line, overlooking a field. It is a great old rifle but I just would rather carry a lever action in the pines, hardwoods and thick stuff, than the Gamemaster.

I've never heard that quoted before, but I sure do love what it implies. As I read it, my first thought was of Matthew Quigley. How I love that character! Thanks.JEBar wrote:“Beware the man with one gun, he knows how to use it.” ....
