New can, and a new HBar build

Post by DsGrouse » Fri May 23, 2025 6:01 am

I couldn't resist picking up a new can for $279 plus a tax stamp.

It was used, and it came from the estate of the late John Price, an attorney who battled for 2 freedoms for quite a while.

These were not a large run. From what I gather, Sig made them under contract for M249 and older M60 machine guns. The can weighs 28 ounces—28.8, to be exact. It is meant for heavy, sustained fire.

Did I mention it was 279 bucks? Supposedly, 700 were made in total, with about 100 to 150 of those being the contract overruns that made it into the civilian market.

The second project i am working on, an Hbar. I was gifted the upper furniture, front sight post, and stock.

So far, it's coming along.

Sweet. I'm hoping that the CANS will be made straight legal in the future and I can avoid all the paperwork and waiting periods. I'd like to have a couple, one for my CZ455 for varmints and one for the Ruger American 556 bolt gun, for larger Varmints. Maybe a third for the Ruger Mk II pistol for close up varmints near the house... the possums tear up the garden and the flower beds looking for grubs, and I'm afraid they will be in the deep brush when the little dog goes out. She'd win, bred for that, but she could get injured doing it.

They are legal in a lot of other countries, and if they do become legal here, the increased sales could cause a price drop. Coupled with the removal of the $200 fee and the lack of that paperwork / waiting period hassle... shooting will be quieter and more people might join in.

I don't look back at the things I can't do anymore with regret, I just look forward to the things I still can.

Federally legal is maybe getting closer... or at least lower fees.

I saw that. Think they'll cut me a check for my 25 stamps?

Updates,

I've got the lower together and 95% of the upper.

All that is left is an Upper parts kit. Forward assist and dust flap.

I'll need to do some sight in, and make sure the front sight/gas block is square. I did my best with measurements, but we'll see.

I put the upper parts kit on yesterday, and the butstock screw. All that is left is to sight it in and see how it shoots.
