My shootin' eye must be getting better

Post by GunnyGene » Wed Jun 25, 2025 10:50 am

I can actually see the gold bead on my .41mag carbine :) . I've had a scope on it for several years, and before that a Skinner set. Since I don't kill Bambi anymore I decided to take the Nikon off yesterday, and re-install the Skinner rear peep, keeping the factory front brass bead since the Skinner front blade is the same height. Haven't been out to sight in yet due to 100+ F & 80% RH weather, but will when it cools off some. I may have to dial in some elevation, but that's easy to do. Hopefully I won't have to take a hammer to the front sight to zero windage.

On the plus side, I can also hang both Henry's on my display without the scope on the .41, but they have to be upside down. Nothing ever turns out like I expect. Oh, well. ;)

.22 Mag on top, .41mag beneath.

Family heirlooms. :) I made the display about 20years ago, for very specific weapons, etc., but didn't think about future acquisitions. I'd have to rebuild it from scratch to properly display the Henry's (or other things) and I'm really not up to that kind of project any more. I've never liked the peg board kind of displays that are common in gun rooms/man caves. There's more to it than just hanging stuff on a wall. ;)

You know I agree, you've seen my display for my knives with the tooled leather background. :D I try and make displays reflect the quality of what they display.

If I were to do something similar, I wouldn't use peg board either. Oregon has strict gun storage law, so I'm not likely to ever do a nice display like that.

Got the Skinner sights figured out early this morning. This was at 30yds according to my range finder, shooting from a bag. Ammo is Underwood 210 XTP, rated at 1560 mv (6.5" Blackhawk) but about 1730 out of my Henry, so very flat trajectory for a pistol caliber and remains supersonic well past 100yds.

Several things going on here. Elevation primarily, and my first 2 shots wide right because of my poor trigger control. Aim point was center of red bull vital zone as well as I could judge. 2nd group still high on first couple rounds so screwed the peep down as far as it would go, but got control of my finger. 3rd group (5 rounds) I aimed low about 4 inches, and everything looked good. I suspect that the Skinners were made for a 100yd zero, which would account for it shooting high at 30. That's ok. As long as I keep that in mind it won't be a problem. :)

I put a peep sight on my Henry: Ranger Point Precision. However, I don't think that it offers a peep sight now. Nonetheless, the sight works for me:
