I never used one on a gun, I would be really hesitant to do it on a anything valuable. For an old shooter, go for it. Start with the FINE grit one, with lots of cutting/ honing oil (not WD 40 or any old lube), to see where metal is being removed and how fast. A blast of brake cleaner will show what is happening and clear the sludge. If it seems too slow, switch to the coarse one, then follow up with the fine. These tools can remove a whole lot of material fast, so take your time. they will also round any sharp edges, like the back of the cone, and will open up the barrel ID if you are careless. If you can fabricate some sort of stop, to control the depth, that would be helpful.
