Picked up a 30-30 - Added Trigger Job Update
Re: Picked up a 30-30 - Added Trigger Job Update
Great shooting looks like you have it dialed in. Nice to see more and more SS shooters here.

That looks like you have right where you want it. Good to know that it likes the Hornady 160 grain Leverevolution ammo, too

Over on Castboolites there is a 17 page discussion on trigger weight and how to fix it. Seems like replacing the main spring with either a 31# or 38# and potentially removing the second smaller spring all together has resulted in 3-3.8# trigger weight. YMMV. I know some have close to 1000 rounds though the rifle with the modified springs.

that sounds like a great hunting combo .... looking forward to hearing about your hunting with it this fallScottCard wrote: ↑Sat May 11, 2019 10:20 pmI was able to get some more shooting in yesterday. This rifle really likes Hornady Leverevolution 160 grain ammo. I was able to get my Swift 3-9x zeroed at 50 yards which should keep within 1.75” out to 125 yards according to the ballistic calculator I used. That will more than suffice as my deer hunting property only provides shots out to about 90 yards.

A spring change wouldn’t have worked in my case. There was a machine mark on the sear that was basically serving as a speed bump in my trigger pull.MJ151 wrote: ↑Wed May 29, 2019 1:10 amOver on Castboolites there is a 17 page discussion on trigger weight and how to fix it. Beyond that, I am not a fan of changing the main spring on a hunting or self defense firearm for several reasons. I know in the revolver world that changing the main spring can increase potential for light strikes, increase lock time and even reduce velocity. I assume the same could apply to rifles and I don’t want any of those things when Mr Big Buck is in my crosshairs.

Re: Picked up a 30-30 - Added Trigger Job Update
While I like to keep everything as "original" as possible, too, there was a marked difference in the weight of trigger pulls between the first two Henry single shots I got my hands on, and the two recent "new models". My early 45-70 and the not much later .243 were OK right out of the box, the 45-70 being surprisingly good. The more recent 30-30 and my Son in Law's .308 trigger pulls were both in excess of rifle weight. How come? I can speculate that Henry may have switched to a heavier spring in order to meet SAAMI drop standards (6 different positions from 4 feet onto a hard surface, if I remember correctly), which is something we've kicked around on this forum in the past. I don't know, and Henry's not sayin', but I think my 30-30 will be just fine with that somewhat lighter main spring. By the way, I left the small spring in place

I also changed the big spring to a 31 lb spring but left the small spring in mine as did some of the guys on CastBoolits. I have not had one misfire because of changing that spring. Mine is a 357 and shoots great.

I am not trying to persuade folks to not make spring changes. I have changed springs on many a revolver with very good results. But...I have learned that “going bang” every time is not the only thing to consider when changing the hammer spring.
