Just cant decide.

Post by BigAl52 » Tue Sep 23, 2025 9:33 pm

Ive been going back and forth with scope of red dot in my case green dot on my Marlin 38-55. I ve just put a green dot on my Henry 22 001T. I cant tell you how much easier it is to place that dot on a target vs line up a couple of irons and hope for a hit on target. I have recently shot some great groups with the Marlin 38-55 using various powders. Currently on the Marlin is a Sig Romeo 5 in a red dot but if I was to keep a dot sight on it I would go with a green reflex sight. Ive also considered a low power variable scope. My eyes anymore fatigue after shooting for a while with iron sights. I find the dot a great alternative to those when shooting for a while. Just wondering what you would do. Couple photos of my current guns are below.

I like the green dot setup.

I've been using a Romeo. It does ok. Havent tried a green dot yet. I'm looking forward to it. It seems to make sense, an easier on the eye color.

I have several green dots already. Im leaning towards that direction because I think I might do more plinkin at steel at 100 to 200 yards than shooting anything longer than that.

200 yards is asking a lot from a dot but I don’t have much experience with them like you do. I still like the low power variable idea with my preference being something in the 2-7x that is shorter in length. I think this size scope looks best on a lever action. I don’t like the 1-4x type with the 20mm exit as I think they have a tactical look that doesn’t look right on a lever.

I opted for an acss style for my Pistol caliber lever guns.

Griffin had a 40% off on black friday and I picked up two of these. I put them on my henry 357 and 45 colt

What's nice is it's lighter than a VPO, still short enough power to shoot up close, and it gives you a reticule for ranging out to further distances.

I feel it's a good bridge between a red dot and a VPO. I made a little dope chart that I tucked into the caps that come with it.

For my 38-35/375 win, I run a VPO, but that's an additional 2lbs of weight when you add the mount.

I like the idea of a magnification to go along with the red or green dot sight. But that reticle is way to busy for me and most of my shooting will be plinking at steel at various ranges. I however may take a few shots at longer distances when I go to my buddies in Wyoming where he has targets at 450 and beyond. Since I have only ever been a cowboy at heart and I was born 100 years to late I have modified my feelings towards leverguns with only iron sights. Besides no matter how hard I try to not let the old man in he is relentless and I am caving to simple anymore. I don't hunt anymore so scopes like you have Hatch are really not what I am after. I think I am leaning to a green dot sight and if I can get one with magnification I just might go that route.
