First off, no pictures today. I was exercising my step son's english pointer in our dog park. He was unusually hard to find today. Finally I saw him near a large bush in the new section of our park. He wouldn't come when called. Very unusual for him, since it's hot here and he doesn't like the heat much. As I got the leash and came towards him, he kept looking up into the bush. Finally I saw a bushy tail. Hmm, he's "treed" a squirrel. Well no, he treed a woodchuck. Since my dog had the encounter, I've been carrying my Beretta 21a when out and about on my property. Well, I aimed at the chucks chest and crack, nothing. The chuck just kept looking at me and back at the dog. A carefully aimed shot at his face got his attention, but he didn't let go. Two more body shots and he was still hanging tight. Then he presented me with a coup de grace shot. That sent him falling and dead as he hit the ground. Of course the dog got a hold of him and carried him out. Then he ran around like a champ until I took him home.
I knew ground hogs could climb, I saw one climb over my rabbit fencing and get into a raised bed once.
I also felt the little Beretta must not generate much velocity. The woodchuck was rather unfazed until the last shot. I have a .22 shot shell chambered usually, but took it out prior to dispatching the woodchuck. The distance from muzzle to chuck was about 3 - 4 feet. It's handier to carry the Beretta than my 2" model 63, but I may try to switch them out. I doubt there would have been any difference with the 63 on the chuck.

Great story. I have a 21A and have trouble cycling if I loose wrist it.

I know Al, Longmire could carry that .45 any time of day or night. He also drove a cool Bronco.
As a mere mortal, it's all I can do to carry something, albeit a pea shooter. It did come in handy when I needed a gun.

I'd like to be more like Longmire, especially the last episode, wink wink,

And to think I'm not a big fan of "Starbuck's" coffee

As a mere mortal, it's all I can do to carry something, albeit a pea shooter. It did come in handy when I needed a gun.

I had a a young man who worked for me that had a Bronco just like Longmires. Ill be in the town that Longmire was filmed in next week. Buffalo Wyoming. I’ll try and get some pictures from the area which is some pretty nice country.

Funny that you posted this up yesterday Dave. I got rid of another groundhog here myself yesterday. My usual is to put them out on the lower part of our yard and let the turkey vultures have them, or the coyotes if they make it past dark. I also set up a trail camera to see what activity they bring.
So this time I got a turkey vulture, and then a bald eagle chased him away. Then another big raptor started fighting with the mature bald eagle over the groundhog. I'm thinking it was an immature bald eagle, but it was bigger, so maybe a golden eagle. They dragged the groundhog out of the frame for the trail camera, but I guess the camera piqued that one bird's curiosity. Here's a screenshot from one of the trail camera clips that shows that bigger bird right in front of the camera. By the time I went out there before dinner, the groundhog was gone and the trail camera was the only way I knew what happened.
